What role did communism play in the cold War?

Russia was one of the two superpowers the cold war was metaphorically fought between. The other was America and for decades the two superpowers, with their opposing ideologies (communism - Russia and capitalism - America). Events such as the Cuban Missiles Crisis, Détente, Prague Spring and Berlin Wall were all caused due to superpower tensions. The cold war started in 1943, following tensions at the three conferences between GB, the USA and USSR (Russia) when deciding how to end WW2. When WW2 was over, the two remaining superpowers, Russia and the USA (as GB had been crushed following WW2) had no common enemy and relationships started turning frosty when in 1945, Harry Truman, president of the USA casually told Stalin, leader of the USSR that the USA had developed the first atomic bomb and was prepared to use it against the Russians. This was the start of approximately 45 years of Nuclear tension, and was only ended when Gorbachev (who became leader of USSR in 1985) called it of at a conference in 1989, and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was another symbol of this release in tension. In 1991, the USSR broke down into several states and its satellite states turned away from communism aswell. Russia is now an independent, capitalist state, as communism quickly fell.

Communism has no economy, as it has no money or wages or prices.

How did communism affect people in china?

My short and indirect answer is this- I believe the world is fortunate that Communism has been in control of China for so long. They are an enterprising and intelligent people. Their drive for gain is unequaled. Just imagine a resourseful ,Democratic and determined nation of 1.4 billion, with each individual given capitalist freedom. The communist government there is slowly pulling the stops out -with a free market economy. We are seeing the results now, the controls can't stay in place much longer. The Chinese are buying into foreign mining companies and buying up huge mineral leases in a scale that's hard to describe. There are 350 million middle class there and they traditionally like to show their wealth in Gold. The government has recently lifted the possession limit from 3 ounces to unlimited. Watch out world!

What was the positive aspects of communism?

Some obvious positive aspects of Communism are that there are no rich people or poor people; wealth is divided evenly. Many more jobs are available, and there is no upper- or lower-class. Everyone makes the same amount of money. However, Communism can't really exist. People would take advantage of the fact that everyone gets money and not work as hard (or at all). Also, there is no clear theory as to how the government would function in a truly Communist society, as no country has successfully implemented Communism without having the government be a dictatorship or a totalitarian government.

Let it run it's course. All politically communist states have either disbanded or in the process of doing so to a greater or lesser degree. How is communism supposed to work?

It is generally a one-party system, although sometimes there are multiple parties, but with one dominant party which the other parties almost invariably support (i.e. the old East Germany).

Political leaders rise up through the bureaucracy; elections offer little or no real choice. Internally the party operates on the principle of democratic centralism, which means that public expressions of dissent from the party line are not allowed.

The economy in a communist state is dominated by state-owned and state-run enterprises, although there is also generally some degree of social or co-operative ownership and of small-scale private ownership.

Contrary to popular belief, communism does not completely operate as a "evil, all-powerful government". A communist government operates well under poverty-stricken countries, providing equal rations of food and property to all. Essentially "take from the rich; give to the poor", a communist nation equalizes the class of all the citizens. Communism was popular during post-World War II times as most of the Asian countries involved struggled to rebuild. Famous examples included China, which became the People's Republic of China.

China was struck by widespread poverty after the invasion by Japan in World War II. Operating under a communist government, it was able to reassure its population, and provide food, water, and shelter to every citizen.

However, in countries such as the United States, communism would not operate well, as most citizens are well above poverty. The United States economy and stature as the world's superpower prevents it from needing a communist government like other nations, and allows it to continue its democratic and free enterprise policies.

The United States despises communist nations (and vice-versa), as both do not understand the governments that best suit the other.

Is communism a type of oligarchy?

Don't listen to that person other person they don't know what they're talking about. Technically, communism is a type of monarchy and to be specific an absolute monarchy. However monarchy/dictatorship never truly exists because it's always a group with one person as the visible leader. Oligarchy means "ruled by a few" and monarchy is just a different type oligarchy.

So there are two answers to your question

1. Technically, no it's a monarchy.

2. Figuratively, it's an oligarchy but not a true oligarchy.

In today's China, the old form of socialism, meaning total ownership of the means of production, has slowly been eroded.
