Cooking corn on the cob on the grill?

Grilled corn on the Cobb is the best in our home. Tear off the shuck, and all of the silk you can. Fill your sink with cool water, and let the corn rest in it for 5-10 min, or while your getting the grill ready. Then just lay each ear on the grill and let the grill do it's magic! The heat from the grill will start to caramelize the sugar in the corn. Turn the corn after a few minutes, when it starts browning. It's done when all sides are a light golden brown. Also, you can leave the husks on to grill. Peel back the husks, not ripping them off, & remove the silk. Pull the husks back up, then leave in the sink filled with water. Let them rest for about half an hour. When grilling, the husks will burn a bit (which is why you want to soak in water first). Turn as each side turns blackish brown. A great topping for this is some softened butter mixed with a dash of cayenne pepper. Smear over the corn, then put a squirt of lime juice onto thre corn. Divine!

What part of the corn stalk is harvested?

For human consumption the cob and the husk are harvested. The husk is just there to protect the cob from rotting, but the cob is what is eaten. Mexican dishes (tamales) use the husk in cooking, so this is often harvested and sold separately.

For animal consumption (cows), the whole plant is usually harvested and ground to make into animal feed.

What is the ratio of soybean meal to corn in livestock feed?

Based on US average yields and protein content, it doesn't. In 2009, US farmers averaged 44 bushels per acre yield for soybeans and 165 bushels per acre for corn. Multiplying those yields times the appropriate test weights for each crop, and then factoring in average protein contents of 8% for corn and 35% for soybeans gives a total of 735 pounds of protein per acre from corn, but 924 pounds per acre from soybeans.

This assumes, of course, that the corn was harvested as a grain crop and not as silage or fodder. In that case, the sheer volume of harvested crop would account for the difference.
