What happened after signing up in World War 1?

The question does not specify, but if you signed up in the US Army for WW1, it probably went something like this:

1) After receiving your physical examination, you stood in line to receive an olive drab uniform with puttees (strips of cloth to keep your pants legs tight around your boots). The uniform does not fit, so you exchange it with someone else for the right size. You also receive a felt campaign hat like Smokey the Bear wears, but later you will receive a British steel helmet, aka a tin lid. Don't worry about this one. One size fits all.

2) You sleep in a barracks with the other recruits, eat lousy food, and every day you awake early to train for war. You are given a Springfield M1903 rifle, and you learn how to shoot with it. You also receive a bayonet which, when fixed to the rifle is about twelve inches shorter than the German rifle with bayonet, so bayonet training will be intensive. Again, don't worry. Bayonets are a tradition left over from the past. The machine gun dominates the Western Front, and you'll probably never get close enough for a bayonet action with the Hun.

3) You'll also receive other equipment that you will need: canteen, gas mask, ammunition belt, and the worst, most uncomfortable backpack ever invented. Some genius decided that your bayonet scabbard should be attached to the side of the backpack instead of hanging from your ammo belt, and it is so long that you can't pull it from the scabbard. Your buddy will have to pull it for you, and you'll pull his. Relax. You'll probably never need it except to open a can of food. And don't worry about German bayonets. A German bullet or artillery shell will probably get you first.

4) Your training is finished very quickly, as your country had tried to avoid involvement in this war until the last minute, but now everything is rushed. You then admire yourself in your uniform, say goodbye to your loved ones, and board your ship to go Over There.

Where there any 14 year old girls on the Titanic?

Yes. Her name was Mrs. Adele Nasser. She was married to Mr. Nicholas Nasser. He was 28 years old. I don't think that I would want to be her, or any of the passengers on the ship at that rate. There was also a 10-month-old and an 11-month old, which I find is very sad, because they would've had no chance of survival. :`( But to answer your question, yes, there was.

Can German U-boat attacks on the Lusitania and sussex be justified?

Anything can be justified. A television program some years ago indicated (showed) a passenger roster showing a passenger possessed a box (20 cartridges) of rifle ammunition for sport hunting. That justified the attack and sinking of a civilian ocean liner (Lusitania in this case); the ship was carrying war supplies!

Who built nuns cross farm on dartmoor who own it?

Found this on the Widecombe in the moor website:

A success story on Dartmoor was the Hooper family who made Nuns Cross Farm, near Foxtor Mire. Crossing wrote in 1903 "It is surprising what can be done even on Dartmoor with perseverance. I remember very well when John Hooper enclosed the little farm at Nuns Cross, and he told me not long afterwards that by the time he had got his walls and his tiny dwelling, and bought a cow, his limited capital had disappeared, or as his wife more forcibly put it, he possessed no more than "fourpence hap'ny" to go on with. Yet he did very well there. During the latter part of his life he was able to sell £100 worth of cattle yearly, which considering the size of his place, was most satisfactory, but he worked hard, for though not a Dartmoor man born, he possessed all the instincts of one".

That is like asking how each person contributes in a large city; the answer would be so large you would die of old age reading it. The basic system of life in a clan was that everyone contributed as they could, while some had "job's" (more like duties) others were less specialized and made general contributions.

Why did Chartism Fail?

Basic reasons for the failure of Chartism

The main problem was how to achieve a revolutionary goal by constitutional means.

  • It failed to obtain parliamentary support for the Charter.
  • The middle-classes either ignored, shunned or condemned Chartism.
  • Chartists were divided among themselves.
  • Government handled the movement firmly and calmly.
  • Chartist demands were too drastic.
  • There was too much diversity in the intellectual and ideological aims of Chartism.
  • Other movements offering more immediate and tangible benefits attracted chartists.
  • The socio-economic position improved after 1842. Prosperity eliminated mass support.
  • Chartism and the Chartists were made to look ridiculous after Kennington Common, and the failure of the Land Plan.
  • The changing sociology of England after railways fragmented the 'unity' of the working classes.
  • Chartism tore itself apart
