What was the best ford motor for hot rods in the late 50's and early 60's?

In the early 60s, in the Ford line, the best hot rod motor was 427 CI engine introduced in 1963. In 1962, they offered a 406 CI for one year, as I recall. In 1961, the 390 CI was the top offering. Prior to that, it was just the 352 CI.

The T Bird offered a 430 CI engine borrowed from Lincoln from 1958 to 1963, I think.

The 406 & 427 models were they only ones that would develop real power.

What is a bowl cut?

A 'bowl cut' in hair cutting got it's name from the way people cut hair themselves at home. Mothers often upturned a large mixing bowl on a child's head and used the bowl's edge as a guide for cutting. Vintage 'Dutch Boy' brand paint cans had a young boy with blond hair, cut in the traditional 'bowl cut'. Probably because of how it was done, and being the cheapest haircut for both boys and girls, the Bowl Cut led to teasing and ridicule, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Though it may now have less bullying, in the 50s and 60s a bowl cut carried a lot of stigmas and cruelty from peers. See related link to see a Dutch Boy Paint can image.

During the 1950s what was a major factor that encouraged families to move to the suburbs?

With the increase of autos in the 1950s, the demand for good quality roads increased. The federal government passed the Interstate Highway Act, 1956, pumping $1 billion a year into the construction of roads. By 1960, $2.9 billion was being used a year. The construction encouraged urban sprawl, as more people could now live in the suburbs and drive the freeways into the cities for work. But it also marked the beginning of the end to the city as a livable location. The middle class left the city to live in the suburbs, urban neighborhoods were split into isolated residential islands walled off from each other by concrete abutments of the freeways.

Who was the most popular baseball player of the 1950's?

The question was the most popular, not the player identified necessarily as the best player of that era. Arguably, Mickey Mantle was the most popular player of the 50's, given the rise in TV coverage during that decade, Mantle's home team being that of the New York Yankees, and the success of that franchise during that time. Other notables during that era would of course be Willie Mays and Ted Williams. Mays popularity during that time might have been affected by his skin color and Williams missed time during the early 50's due to his service in the Korean War. Add to that that Williams was past his prime during the 50's, albeit still being a very good hitter. Still, Mantle became a baseball icon and was a hero to many a youngster growing up during this era.

What is a signed contract with the St. Louis Browns from the 1950's worth?

The type of document, or contract that you have is important on assessing a value. The content of the document, and if any player, team, or league officials signed the documentis all important. Player contracts for a significant player could have high value. More information would be need to help you out. Any vintage player contract or document from this era could be worth a couple of hundred to thousands of dollars if a significant player or team official is involved. If authentic.

Often reproductions (fantasy memorabilia) of documents are made, and are more of a novelty and sell for about $5.- $10. The sontract you have would have to be authenticated to get full value. Knowing the history of ownership of this contract or knowing it's origins will secure you knowledge if its authenticity. If you found it in a shoe box and do not know it's origin then the question of its authenticity should be in question. I have seen many Mickey Mantle New York Yankees reproduction rookie contarcts (fantasy memorabilia) selling on eBay for about $10.00 * In a 2008 auction a Collection of Twenty-Nine 1919-1922 St. Louis Cardinals Player Contracts with Nineteen Signed by Branch Rickey sold for $12,925.00 * A 1974 Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves Contract sold for $6,462.50 * An American League Uniform Employe's Contract between Eddie Collins and the Philadelphia Athletics dated June 27, 1931, signed by Eddie Collinsand American League President William Harridge sold for $2,115.00.

Why did the Soviets need spies in the 1950s?

To find out what we were trying to hide from them. Answer Spies, agents used to gather information on opposing parties, have been in use since the earliest communities were established. An individual or group of individuals who can infiltrate an adversary's area of control and gather information not readily available provide a great advantage in conflict. If a nation (or a corporation, political party, revolutionary group, etc.) can gather information about their adversary and its capabilities, it is better prepared to guard its own interests. This information may lead to a preemptory attack, establishment of stronger defenses, or increased diplomacy to avoid conflict. The Soviet Union needed spies to accomplish their intelligence gathering, just as every other country did (and continue to do).
