How were the views of the democrats and republicans different during the 1870's?
Democrats mainly lived throughout the country. The party had been formed in 1812 and were paramount nationally and in the States prior to the Civil War. They favored States Rights generally and limited federal government.
Republicans formed in 1856 and gradually replaced the Whig party. Their numbers increased with the influx of immigrants into the Northeast because people left the Democratic party fearful the immigration would bring too many Catholics to the country.
The 1870's were a dynamic time for the United States of America. The West was still fighting Indian wars and Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were inventing.
Women's rights were the topics of change in many arenas. Women lawyers were first given the right to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court in this period and Susan B. Anthony illegally voted in a Presidential election. Both the Democrats and the Republicans were under pressure from women and neither was rushing to embrace the cause.
Economically, Republicans favored high tariffs to keep out foreign goods and rely on American industry and Democrats favored only enough tariffs to pay for their view of limited government.

How did democrats and republicans differ on the best ways to improve opportunity for americans?
Republicans believe the best way to improve opportunity for Americans is through what in Europe would be called austerity: cutting taxes, removing regulations and privatizing everything they possibly could.
Democrats believe in investing in America through infrastructure improvements and education spending.
Austerity hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried, but that never stopped the Republicans from believing the only reason it's not working is we're not going far enough.
Another view
Democrats believe in big government, period. Hand outs that encourage people to stay where they are in life, and have no ambition. Democrats usually preside over more state welfare, paid for by taxpayers. Democrats today have 53 per cent of Americans getting some kind of government help, the most in history. They want people to be dependent on government from cradle to grave. As for education spending, we spend more than any other country per student.
Yes, if "capacity" refers to the shareholder's ability to obtain information, consultation, and to determine which way he or she will vote. That is, the capacity to make a decision should not depend upon number of shares.
Obviously, a majority shareholder has greater "voting power", because most corporations allocate votes according to number of shares of a particular class of stock.
Why do democrats want more social programs?
Democrats historically supported state programs, such as 'Food Stamps', financial assistance, programs to support and assist single mothers in returning to the "employed" population, etc. Seems as though there has been a complete turnaround. Republicans, on the other hand, appear historically anti "social programs advocates. That's why I, and a number of my relatives usually voted a Democratic 'straight ticket.' Now it appears, as my father said 'prior to his passing, that now it is the time to vote as a REPUBLICRAT, meaning to "vote for the lesser of two evils," rather than the best man. Kinda' sad, wouldn't you say?
Why do democrats like to spend your money?
Because they're politicians! Trust me on this: Republicans probably like to spend tax revenues more than Democrats do. They definitely like spending them on more expensive things, like wars and weapons that won't work.

What is the email address of US Congressman Donald Payne?
I was deeply touched by the Congressman's concern for the people of Darfur. As an African, I feel that if we had more lawmakers like Donald Payne in the United States, the situation in Much of the Third World would be very different.
I would have liked to send Mr. Payne a short note to thank him on behalf of those people of Darfur who may never lknow how to reach the Congressman.
