Updated answer: some household products, like Epsom salts, can be used in the garden. Tea leaves and coffee grounds can be added to the compost pile, and compost is a good basic fertilizer. The "animal leftovers" mentioned above, aka manure, is also a good fertilizer once composted. I would not recommend sugar water, since it does not contain any of the NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer components. And sugar water can lead to bacterial and fungal growth in soil.
For best results, use fertilizers commercially sold, or make your own compost.
Compost is absolutely THE BEST amendment for soil. It is rich with living communities of organisms that will gladly share nutrients with your plants. If at all possible, start composting NOW!
Also, Epsom salts (in small amounts: 1-2 tsp. per gallon of water) are great for boosting magnesium and sulfate. Coffee grounds are great sources of nitrogen, and they look nice, like a rich, dark soil. Egg shells (ground up) add calcium carbonate to the soil.
