i have a 1997 1.6 8v punto. this is where it is on mine......
if you jack the car up and look close to the front, you should see the filter slightly to the drivers side on a angle.. It rides quite low down so jacking the car up would be the best option. i know its not v. informative but i cant think how else 2 explain it.

from fiat dealer over 200 if you search around, alot less, i got a reconditioned one for 109 that's the cheapest unless you take a risk on e bay which are up for fifty something, i would advise buying the old fashioned way and see before you buy, its also handy if you get the part number if you have the opportunity to take it out. ring around and do your research

Where are the timing marks for the belt on a 1.2 r reg punto?
First off, the timing marks as per Haynes Manual are off the wall. Use this method as follows. Turn the camshaft with a spanner until notch on cam lines up with 'notch' on case-located approx at 9.00 o'clock position. Now look at groove on crankshaft, this should be lined up(within an inch) with the 'elbow' or 'apex' on the web casing, located at approx 10.00 oclock. If this mark is out by 360deg then you have to go around again with the spanner on the camshaft until the 2 timing marks nearly line up. Having done this you now have an approx position of the marks!! Next, take out no. 1 cylinder spark plug and pop in a slender screwdriver. Again turn the camshaft an inch or two, forwards and backwards until you get the exact position at which the screwdriver rises and then begins to fall-this is the TDC point(takes a little practise). Next pop out the rubber grommet on the gearbox bellhousing and you will see (use a torch) the flywheel mark lining up with indicator. You can now finely adjust the camshaft until the marks on the flywheel align perfectly. Next job is to remove the high tension electrical gizmo located on the back side of the camshaft. After this is removed you will be able to see the end of the camshaft with a horizontal slot running through it -this slot must be perfectly horizontal with the cylinder head casing-if it is not then your timing is out and you will have to adjust the timing belt on the camshaft accordingly. The fuses are to the right of the steering column just inside the grey dash panel - you should see 2 grey 'screws'. turn those and pull it down. The fuses are in front of you. The cigarette lighter is on the far right row, it's a 20amp one (yellow) but i can't remember which possition it is in. There are only a couple of yellow ones in that row so check them both.
your piping for the coolant system or radiator could be leaking and causing a loss of coolant making the temperature rise. Have you had it pressure tested?

Fiat do not issue torque settings for a punto they use angles so that you can snap your stretch bolts! after contacting fiat and haynes neither of them would give proper torque settings, so i delved into my many tech manuals on fiat fire engines which is what is in your punto and i have successfully changed many fiat punto head gaskets using the following torque settings: stage 1 starting from the centre head bolts tighten to 33nm: stage 2:65nm and finally stage 3: 96nm these torque settings work fine and will probably save you buying new head bolts.

AnswerJust had a quote to have a new cylinder head gasket fitted to my 1.2 8 v (2001) Fiat Punto. This includes head skimming and new bolts etc.�400 was the painful figure. The car has done 24.000 miles and suffers symptons of poor starting, engine overheating,fan coming on and coolant loss. Also has cabin heater problem caused by what I originally thought was an air lock.
Car has been checked twice (including 24k service!)
Apparently after much internet reading :
1. Cylinder head gasket problem is rife on this engine. 2. When engine cold the plugs are damp through water caused by gasket leak. 3. When engine warms up gasket expands and fills leak! 4.Engine runs better when warm but heater in cabin not functioning correctly. what a pain. 5. Continued use will ruin the heater matrix as well. Costly repair. 6. There are two bleed valves on the car for water/radiator problems. a- open bonnett and look to top right of radiator. there is a white pastic screw, that's number 1 bleed valve. b - second bleed valve located near bulkhead on 1" diameter hoses just off a junction box.
This is my last respite. Following that it's either part ex the car or pay the �400.
If you know a competent mechanic you can buy all the necessary parts for around �80. Dont forget the head must be skimmed.
Lastly all these problems have not hepled the fuel consumption which is crap. I get about 300 miles to a full tank. I have a Fiat Stilo which does 500 miles to a tank.
I hope that if you aare reading this you have fewer problems than I have had. The only other issue with the punto was water getting into the headlights !! I had two puntos (at the same time) Both had the same problem. To be fair Fiat said they would repair both for free. I doubt I will get the same response!!
