He was the Prime Minister from February 16th 1959 to December 2nd 1976, when he then became the 23rd President of Cuba. He left office on February 14th 2008.

Came to power as result of Cuban Revolution which overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Bastita.

Fidel was a lawyer. In 1952 Fidel Castro became a candidate for Congress for the Cuban People's Party and he was the favorite for the next election. But General Fulgencio Batista, with the support of the armed forces, took control of the country. Castro with 123 men and women attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. He was arrested was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He was released after two years. Castro left for Mexico where he began to plan another attempt to overthrow the Cuban government.

After building up a stock of guns and ammunition, Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida, and eighty other rebels arrived in Cuba in 1956. This group became known as the July 26 Movement and they made their base in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. As the history shows he did not used the military but instead he used revolutionaries. He came in power on the 1th of January 1959.

The USA never tried to assassinate Feidel Castro. Tensions were high during the "Cuban Missle Crisis" and Cuba's support for Russia when tensions were high between USA and Russia. However, the USA has never attempted to assassinate Feidel Castro.

but the USA government and JFK did tray and assassinate Castro before the missile crisis, in the bay of pigs fiasco in 1961, however the Cuban troops met the sneaky Americans on the beach and it was all very embarrassing for the US, Kennedy even denied it! Fidel Castro identified him with great generals such as Alexander the Great, Aníbal, and Napoleon. He also expresses great respect and admiration, in spite of their political views, for the pro-Franco Spanish Jesuits who educated him. Castro's authoritarian paternalism can't conceive the possibility that Cuban revolutionaries could effectively defend the country and socialism if they had political differences and were organized in more than one party. He makes it abundantly clear that his view of socialism requires a "unity" that is incompatible with the organized expression of differences of opinion.

In early 1963, Fidel Castro had been invited to meet with Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Moscow. It is important to note that it was the "new" Cuban leader travelling to Moscow and not Khrushchev meeting Castro in Havana. Reportedly the purpose was to assure and smooth over any of Castro's fears of becoming sacrificed to allow for better relations between the USSR and the West. Based on Castro's speeches upon his return to Cuba, it appeared that any ill feelings between the two nations had been healed when Castro met with the leaders in Moscow.
