To be effective does a symbol need to acquire a conventional or accepted meaning?

I would think, yes. Symbols are to visual experice what acronyms are to language. They are a sort of shorthand communication. If I say "FBI" chances are very good you know what I mean. But if I say "KPX" chances are equally good that no meaning is conveyed. Why? Because there is no accepted meaning for KPX. We have no shared experience of KPX.

What is the meaning of Art Theory?

Art Theory is like Music Theory.. a non-sequitor. Theory implies that there is a "science" to them, and while that is very loosely true, most art and music is a result of subjective tastes.

That being said, art theory is the study of technique, medium, and style used by artists to create certain affects or feels.

Just as one minor (and rather superficial example) in an art theory class you might study the use of shading to create the illusion of shadow and depth in a drawing.

What is the difference between Cave art and graffiti?

This is a complicated question, so here's an oversimplified answer.

They are not related.

This has nothing to do with the morals and ethics of art, but graffiti relates more to vandalizing and putting your name out for others to see. Many people tie graffiti and tagging together, while others see the two art forms as distinct- that is another issue entirely.

This is oversimplifying what graffiti is and what graffiti artists stand for, but it can be looked at as a rebellious action. It is an action against authority and a movement of free expression.

Whereas cave paintings are an ancient art form. It was not about rebelling against an establishment. It is thought to be a sacred practice that took place thousands of years ago.

The only similarities they both have is that they are on walls. Other than that NOT THE SAME.

What is atmospheric perspective?
