Fleas are wingless insects that live off the blood of mammals and birds. There are over 2,000 species of fleas, and due to their thick outer layer, are difficult to kill through force alone. When fleas feed on a host, they tend to leave raised and itchy bumps, and can sometimes cause diseases.

Either get really good with flea genitalia or default to the fact that in most species female fleas are larger than males and make your best guess
When I was little my mom always used Ivory bar soap. My sister-in-law swears by dial bar or liquid. I think its the soup changing the density of the water and drowning the fleas. I'm sure some kinds of soap drys out the animals skin though.
Dish washing liquid mixed with water, about 1/2 inch of in a pan will drown the fleas also.
What can you use on a dog if you don't have flea and tick shampoo?
You can use any form of shampoo or liquid soap; even dishwashing liquid will work. Your dog will never know! They can't read the labels.

Can baking soda kill fleas on puppies and dogs?
From what I have read and heard you have to use equal parts of baking soda, and iodized salt. This combination is supposed to dehydrate and kill fleas and eggs hatchlings. Hey the way I see it baking soda is cheap, and so is salt compared to most flea products, so why not try it? You also must treat your pets, and again from what I have read and heard Dawn dish liquid is a great cleanser to use to bath pets and kill fleas. Also, I read something about liquid garlic, feeding it to the pets in their daily meals. Fleas appearently don't like the smell and won't get on the pets. Hope this helps!!! Good luck!!!
