Why hot food stays hot inside a styro-foam?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Styrofoam has a high resistance to heat transfer- that is heat does not "flow" through it very easily. Therefore, heat from the outside air does not enter the container very quickly. This happens because Styrofoam consists of expanded polystyrene. If you looked at Styrofoam under a very strong microscope you'd see millions of tiny pockets in the foam. These pockets trap stagnant air. Air (as long as it's not moving in a current) is very resistant to heat transfer. Hope this helps!

What are some ways in which food is preserved?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are pickles, onions, peppers and other foods that are pickled: they are stored in a vinegar brine for a long time. Lots of foods that used to be considered short term are preserved in a refrigerator or a freezer, like milk and other dairy products. Lots of foods can be frozen and kept for longer, like meat, vegetables, soups, pastries, etc. Foods can be stored in cans in a special way so they don't spoil for a long period of time. These are usually vegetables, beans, fruits, nuts, etc.

Some foods - fruits, beans, etc. - can be dried so that they last longer.

Does coffee stay fresher in the refrigerator?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No.

When you chill coffee you condense the moisture in the air in the bag, and draw the condensation out of the beans/grounds.

As you warm the beans/grounds they will not reabsorb all the moisture. The flavor will stale, and when subjected to hot water the acid and oils will be released in concentration giving the coffee an overdone flavor.

Should food be stored below cooked food?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cooked food is free from harmful bacteria as the cooking has sterilised it. If the the raw food drips onto the cooked food then it will no longer be free from harmful bacteria and could make you ill if you ate it. For this reason you must always store food that has been cooked or to be eaten raw (such as fruit) above the raw meat so that drips can not contaminate it.

Why refrigerator may freez foods?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

because when food is refrigerated it prevents bacteria from growing on your food, bacteria that can harm you, or kill you!

Sometimes your refrigerators temperature may vary. This is likely due to the amount of food inside. If the refrigerator is freezing your food it is too cold. Adjust the refrigerator's thermostat to a lower numeric setting on the control so that the temperature is steady at 38 degrees.

How long is food good in refrigerator?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If your refrigerator is kept shut and only opened briefly to retrieve items and remains below 41 degrees you can store it for up to 7 days. If spoilage occurs after the second day, send it to the bin, food is not bound by time. Temperature, Acidity, Moisture, Time and Oxygen all play important roles in bacterial growth.

However, if your house is like mine, I imagine that your refrigerator door may get left open for up to a couple of minutes at a time. If this is the case, or your refrigerator or food does not maintain 41 degrees or less you should chuck it after 3 days. But again as I said, refrigeration is only one element to food spoilage.

If you have any other food questions ask them here or post them in my forum.
