How to Change the Power Steering Pump in a Ford F150

Proper lubrication of an F150's hydraulic steering linkage is vital to the functionality of the truck's power steering system. Over time, the seals and bearings within the truck's power steering pump corrode, resulting in power steering fluid leaks and premature wear due to the increase in temperature of the power steering components. Leaks can also pose a fire hazard if the fluid contacts the engine or the exhaust manifold when hot. Thankfully, replacement power steering pumps for a Ford F150 are readily available at most automotive parts retailers, and the replacement process is relatively straightforward.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Place a container underneath the power steering pump to capture the power steering fluid as it is drained from the pump. The F150's power steering pump is located on the driver's side of the engine. Remove both the input and output hoses from the back of the power steering pump. Both hoses attach to the pump with a nut, which is located at the end of each hose. Loosen both nuts with a wrench, then pull both hoses away from the pump and allow the fluid to drain into the container.

2. Step 2

Loosen the pump's adjustment bolt with a wrench to allow the pump's belt to slacken, then lift the belt away from the pump's pulley. The adjustment bolt is located at the bottom of pump where the pump meets its mounting bracket.

3. Step 3

Remove the pump's retaining bolts with a wrench, then lift the pump out of the engine compartment. The retaining bolts are located on the mounting bracket which secures the pump to the engine.

4. Step 4

Place the replacement pump into position and install the pump's retaining bolts through the mounting bracket. Do not tighten these bolts yet.

5. Step 5

Install the two hoses to the back of the pump and place the pump's belt over the pulley on the front of the pump.

6. Step 6

Pull the pump away from the engine to tighten the tension on the belt, and then tighten each of the pump's retaining bolts.

7. Step 7

Fill the power steering pump with power steering fluid to approximately 1/2" of the top, then start the engine and turn the steering wheel several times to the right and to the left to bleed the air out of the steering system. Turn the engine off, then check the pump's fluid level with the pump's dipstick. The fluid level should appear at or just under the "Full" mark on the pump's dipstick. Add additional fluid if necessary.

Ignition Switch Removal & Installation 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column. 3. Detach the ignition switch electrical hardness connector. 4. Remove 2 nuts retaining the ignition switch to the steering column housing. 5. Lift the ignition switch upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch. To install: > When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch. 6. Engage the actuator rod in the ignition switch. 7. Place the ignition switch on the steering column housing and loosely install 2 retaining nuts. 8. Move the switch up or down along the column to locate the mid-position of the actuator rod lash, then tighten the retaining nuts to 47-64 inch. Lbs. (5-7 Nm). 9. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud. 10. Connect the negative battery cable. 11. Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and verified that the engine will only crank in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also check to make certain the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions.

On the 1997 Ford F150, the differential could be in both the front and rear. From 1997 and on Ford used two different axles. Your truck could either have the 8.8 or 9.75 differential. If you have a rear differential you would need to lower your spare tire to have access to it.

Look to the right of the fuse panel (and to the left of the radio) and there is a black plastic rectangular cover that needs to be removed to get at the relay.

Squeeze both ends of the cover and it pops right off.

Once you find it, it isn't that hard to find- but it isn't put in great spot either.

Sounds like the crank position sensor is faulty. Get a volt meter, set it to AC.Find the crank sensor on the block of the engine. Disconnect sensor and probe the two wires with the meter. Crank engine and you should have 0.2 - 2.0 volts ac. If this is not the case replace. If ok, carry out same check with camshaft sensor on top of engine. Hope this helps.

The 1972 Ford F-100 is a half ton truck and the 1972 Ford F-250 is a 3/4 ton truck.

The F-100 and the F-250 signify the cargo carrying capacity of the truck. A F-350 would be a one ton.

The vin number can be found on the left side (drivers side) of the dashboard. Look through the windshield, It maybe covered in dirt.

More than likely it is a bad ground wire. You can check the connections from battery to frame... I would drop a dollar or two on a new ground wire, clean the frame well, rough it up, and make a good connection. Most of the time a dead battery is caused by a faulty connection... usually the ground side.

If that doesn't fix it... take the battery out, turn it all the way around twice, set it back in, tap the top with a phillip's head screw driver [standard size will do], reconnect the battery, slam the hood, spit on it, curse, get in and put your head on the steering wheel, pray for forgiveness for being angry and cursing, ask the Lord for help, and turn the key.

If that don't work...then God don't care and that things got the devil in it.

This is a very difficult question to answer considering the broad scope of the question and the unknown ability of the person changing the brakes. Shop manuals have very many pages of instructions aimed at persons with at least some mechanical knowledge. I would suggest this job be left to a trained professional as the brakes are the most important safety devices on the vehicle. If you screw up a brake job someone could die!

The mechanical fuel pump on this vehicle has an arm that fits into the front housing on the engine, and is "pumped" by an eccentric that bolts to the end of the camshaft and timing gear set. If I am not mistaken, depending on the series of engine that you have, the arm can be two different lengths or the eccentric might have come off the dowell pin that it locates itself on.

You can't generally as the adjustment is automatic, however the rear brake calipers have things on them you can click to take up slack in the cable. If you do this and find your brake is still not working properly, the cables have stretched and need replacing.
