Not necessarily. It can be a small sign, but if he is himself, then he's probably fine. Gerbils have very silky coats which can get greasy very easily. Here are some possible solutions/causes:
- lack of minerals (my gerbils coats were very ruffled and have improved with their mineral block). Play on their hobbies- they love to chew so provide him with a mineral block big enough to chew.
- Lack of proper bedding. Certain types of bedding can make their hair ruffled. If you give them a sand pit, this should help immensley (thats how they clean themselves in the wild).
- make sure your hands arent dirty or greasy when you hold him.
- Sometimes its just their type of fur (my gerbils have very silky and greasy fur, others may have coarse fur).
But watch him carefully and he doesnt seem to have any other problems, then hes probably okay. If you notice something strange, you should perhaps take him to the vet.

i realy dont think they sell leashes for gerbils and you diffenenty dont want to tiy a string to your gerbil but if you still want to keep looking for a leash you can ask a vet or someone who works at a pet store.
