I'm not trying to be flippant, but you need to look for the best extended warranty service plan you can get for the money. WHY? Today's televisions are very expensive to repair and depending on what television you purchase, individual replacement parts can easily run into the thousand dollar range, plus the service call. (Trust me on this, I'm an experienced TV technician.)

Other than that, find out as much as you can on the internet about your TV. I'm not talking about the manufacturer's website or store sites, because they'll all say their products are the best. Look for blogs and discussion forums where you'll hear the real stories from real people who own the TV you're considering.

One thing we all know is that people will most certainly complain about something before they'll praise it, but it will give you an idea of the problams and expenses involved.

As a technician, I personally don't think much of today's TV's, and when my little 27" hitachi bites the dust (14 yrs old and still goin' strong) I'm really going to be hard pressed finding anything I feel I can trust to last more than three years or so. (How's that for an honest answer?)

Most modern televisions have at least a headphone output so even if there is no dedicated audio line output, the 3.5mm mini jack can be used to take the television output to an amplifier with just a little experimentation with the levels to be used.

If there isn't even a headphone output, the other solution is to take the audio output from the video source itself. Satellite receivers, cable boxes and disc players usually have an audio line output. Each of the sources can be routed to the amplifier and bypass the television altogether. If this solution is chosen, there is a possibility that the audio may not be synchronized to to the vision. This is due to the signal processing that takes place between the video source and the image reaching the display itself. Most digital receivers and players have a menu setting to adjust the audio delay to overcome this. Look for menu selections called "audio sync" or "audio delay". This solution will work for all sources other than the tuners built in to the television. External receivers are the only solution for this.

Note: There are solutions that involve adding wiring to the inside of the television. Televisions have potentially fatal voltages present inside them. Unless you are qualified, do not attempt any solution that involves taking apart any equipment.

DNR on an HDTV is not for sound. It is for the picture quality. You only really need it on if you watch a lot of standard definition programs. It will make them look slightly better. It should be off if you are watching high definition.

Assuming the video cable has the right connectors, probably RCA type (phono connectors) then it can be used for audio signals. In fact, some high end audio interlinking cables use video cable because it is claimed that they work better than standard audio cable. (Note that this is the subject of fierce debate among audiophiles and there is no proof that video cable is an improvement on audio cable for audio signals)

Using audio cable for video can also be done up to a point. For short connections, up to a few feet or a couple of metres, an audio cable will work just fine. As the length of the lead increases, the cable will begin to interfere with the video signal and cause loss of definition or ghost images.

From what I've read and seen if you are being told dynamic contrast ratio it is likely 1000 to 2000 times the static contrast ratio. The multiplier will be different for EVERY brand comparison, but should general fall in this range.
