In Nineteen Minutes did Josie really love Matt?

Yes, it is believed that Josie truly did love Matt. This is shown throughout various moments in the book, such as her visiting his grave to be near him and her numerable mentionings of him during the aftermath of the shooting -- how he smelt, how he hugged her, etc. However, and this is a very strong however, it was under my own impression that while Josie did love Matt, she loved him for both the right and (primarily) wrong reasons; reasons that Josie herself knew about, which was why she had early intentions to kill herself. While she cared deeply for Matt, she knew that Matt loved the Josie that she only portrayed herself to be -- a person that Josie did not understand or love. Additionally, Matt was her link to the popular crowd, the popular crowd that treated her as one of them. As Matt continuously took obsessive, possesive, and at times abusive actions towards Josie, she begun to subconciously understand that as long as she was with Matt, she would never love herself. Being with Matt allowed Josie no personal growth, as their relationship forced her to stay the same. To Josie, though, this was a sacrifice worth making, for being a part of the popular crowd was something she felt she had to keep. Because Josie didn't love herself, she feared she would not survive being on the outside of the popular crowd or not being loved by Matt. All this comes together in the end, when Josie herself shoots Matt -- at that moment, she understood that that was her chance to be free of him, that perhaps that would be her only chance. So she took the shot. So yes, Josie did love Matt Royston -- simply for the wrong reasons. You can't pick you who fall in love with!

What happens between Kay and Malone in Scarpetta by patricia cornwell?

To answer your question simply, nothing, as there is not a character named Malone in any of the Scarpetta novels. In Scarpetta, two characters with similar names would be Pete Marino and Mike Morales. Marino being the reoccurring character from every novel, and Morales from this one alone. I'm going to assume you're speaking of Marino, knowing their volitale history from Book of the Dead. In Scarpetta, Pete is an investigator in New York and Kay, still doing some consulting, has a case that takes her there. Needless to say, they end up working the case together. To avoid completely spoiling the story, I will simply say that, throughout the book, some things are resolved and some things aren't, only that it all works out in the end, in spite of the turmoil leading up to it. And I suggest you read the book and find out all the details for yourself. Its worth it.

What is the Licked Hand legend?

A young girl, about 15 years of age, was left home alone by her parents. They were going to a firend's birthday party, and were expected home very very late. The girl said goodbye to her mom and dad, ate some leftover pasta from the previous day, did her homework, and then sat down to watch T.V. with her dog, a golden retriever. As she watched Family Guy, she acidentally pressed domething on the remote and the channel changed to the news. She was about to go back to Family Guy, when she heard something that caught her attention. "A mentally ill patient has escaped from an asylum. He is unpredictable and deadly, not exactly murderous, but his mind is mixed up and no one knows what he might do next. Be on the look-out. That is all." The announcer said. The girl got scared, so she made sure all the windows were closed then made sure the front and back doors were locked. She went to close the basement windows, but they wouldn't close. So she just locked the basement door. She decided to go to bed a little early because she was still scared, and so she brushed her teeth, got in her PJ's and layed down. Her dog assumed his position under the bed. She drifted off to sleep, but awoke at midnight to a DRIP DRIP DRIP! coming from her bathroom. She got scared, so she reached her hand down, the dog licked it, and she fell asleep again. She awoke again at 3:45 AM to the same DRIP DRIP DRIP! She reached under her bed, her dog licked her hand and that was that. At 6:57 AM, she awoke to two noises. One was the usual DRIP DRIP DRIP and the other was her parents' car pulling into the driveway. Her dog licked her hand, and she gathered enough courage to go see what the dripping was. She entered her bathroom, and screamed. The dripping noise had been her dog; it had been stabbed and hung in the shower, blood dripping from its neck. She turned to the mirror, where written in the dog's blood, it said "HUMANS CAN LICK TOO!!!"

Intimidation Factor:

The Licked Hand is an urban legend, and urban legends are targeted at frightening you of every day things. It turns out the madman had entered the girls home, murdered her dog, and started licking her hand (Yeah, he was that psycho!). This is supposed to warn you: Make sure it's your DOG whose licking your hand!

How did the stories that the writers read to amuse themselves help produce a frame of mind conductive to gothic writing?

The stories the writers read often featured themes of mystery, the supernatural, and the macabre, which fueled their imaginations. These tales helped create a sense of unease or tension, which was essential for gothic writing. What does the dungeon symbolize in pit and pendulum?

The story is open to interpretation, but a common view is this. The pit represents hell or death, because it is a frightening, unknown concept to the narrator. The pendulumrepresents time. It swings like a clock pendulum, which shows the seconds until the next minute. Each swing for this bladed pendulum means one step closer to death. The rats (although commonly viewed as vulgar, unwanted creatures, which is what the narrator thinks at first) can prove to be a second chance at life. The rats chew through the bindings on the narrator, freeing him and escaping the pendulum. The narrator is using something viewed as bad to his advantage. Also, the narrator's rescue can also be viewed as a second chance, or "heaven" opposed to the hellish pit.

Basically, Poe's message was a simple one. In life, people can take a bad situation and use it to their advantage.

What is the most popular horror story in the world?

Unfortunately there isn't a global consensus on this as individual language groups have their own 'most popular' stories. What is popular in French maybe completely unknown in Chinese. And popularity is time dependent. What may have been very popular once maybe almost unknown today.

If durability of fame is any indication of popularity then in English I would say the top contenders would be:

  • Frankenstein
  • Dracula
  • The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde.

In french:

  • The Phantom of the Opera.
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

In German:

  • The Damnation of Faust

Who is life was the book Dracula based on?

Many readers and critics have compared Count Dracula to Vlad the Impaler. Various references in the book seem to be paralleling events in The Impaler's life. For instance, a mention is made that Dracula is the "one who was betrayed by his brother" and Vlad is known to have been betrayed by his own brother, Radu the Handsome. Vlad's patronymic inspired Dracula. Bram Stoker came to hear about Vlad's reputation through a friend, Armin Vamberys conversations. Note: this is only speculation since there is no proof Bram and Armin ever discussed Vlad.

What happens in the end of the story Wide O by Elsin Ann Perry?

The woman is getting chilled, and she walks into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. She thinks, "Well, no WONDER it's cold, with the door wide o---"

At the beginning of the story, after she's thinking about the serial killer in the area---and she's alone---she thinks that there's no reason to be afraid, since she's locked all the doors.

The doors have been locked, but the kitchen door is open, the dialogue is of her thoughts...and since she's cut off at the o---I'd say that the serial killer has struck again. And I say so because I wrote the story.
