I'm not sure if this is correct, but in the beginning, the main character was shot and put in a hospital. He wakes up, and notices some flowers a friend had given him where dead. As he walks out his room, there is barely any light and every single place was covered in stuff, he notices a padlocked door. As he goes closer, the zombies in there notice,and try to break out. As he finds his way out the hospital, every patient in the building had been laid down side by side.

Ponyboy picks up the glass in the parking lot because he doesn't want anyone to get a flat tire. That shows that he may act like he is tough, but he still cares on the inside.
