What is the best wood choice for a painted porch floor?

There are several choices here and a lot may have to do with what your local lumberyard has available. Treated wood is used very often for decks, but is not usually available in T&G. Redwood is available in T&G but is rather expensive and does draw upon our redwood forest reserve. Another choice, and the one I reccomend, is knotty yellow pine. It does come in T&G boards and if it has a lot of sap in it, it is pretty rot resistant. It is not as easy to work with as redwood and the drawbacks are many. The biggest advantages are cost and the woodsy look of knotty pine.

Okay, now we know what we are dealing with and we can start. First, make sure your framework is level and square. A slight slope to the outside is a good thing. From 1/16 to 1/8 in. per foot is good. Since this is T&G there won't be any place for the water to go unless you have a slope and the water will just pond. I hope you have a cover on top or this would not be a good idea. But, I will still assume you know what you are doing, (with the rain and stuff).

Layout your boards and stagger the joints. Use stainless steel screws. Don't paint it! The pitch will just bleed through. Use a good grade polyurethane thinned with turpentine to seal. Don't use thompson's water seal, it's too expensive and it sucks anyway. You will have to do the sealing process a few times over the months and years. You'll know what to do.

The above answer is correct. DON'T USE THOMPSONS WATERSEAL. I put it on my deck and it quit working after 6 months. I complained to the paint dept. at Lowes and they told me they get that all the time. Many many complaints. I was told Olimpic Maximum was much better.

What are the usual dimensions of a bedroom?

In an economy or starter home, a child or guest bedroom will often be about 110 square feet, plus the size of the closet attached to the room. In a mid-range home, slightly larger, perhaps 140-150 square feet. A luxury home will often not have much larger bedrooms (except the master) but will have a bathroom for each bedroom and much more closet space for each room.

Can the distance from counter top to upper cabinet be more than 18 inches?

Yes, but at that height you would be building them for a tall person. The average is 19 inches. This allows a woman to reach items on the second shelf easily.

What size are double sheets?

"Double" sheets are now more often called "Full", but the they refer to the same size and are often used interchangeably. Additionally, the fitted sheets are different sizes than the flat sheets.

SIZE: (WxL) FITTED - FLAT

TWIN 39 x 75" - 66 x 96" (102" long for TWIN X-LONG)

FULL: 54 x 75" - 81 x 96 "

QUEEN: 60 x 80" - 90 x 102"

KING: 76 x 80" - 108 x 102"

These measurements are for only for the USA or North America, as the sizes differ depending on areas. Also, there are slight variances from time to time, however when dealing with a fitted sheet, you want to make sure there is ample "pocket room" to fit your mattress. Since some mattresses are taller (pillow tops et al) than others, a fitted sheet may end up a little too small if you have something like a pillow top. This often results the sheet not wrapping around the bed completely, causing it to keep coming off. However usually if you buy quality sheets this is not a problem.

Although favorite colors will change from person to person, the most common is blue (the shade of blue changes).

Well I think it is purple for teenagers... All my friends like purple!

I think that it all depends on your personality like if you were a goth you would like more of the darker colors and if you were a popular girl you like more of the hot pinks and light blues.

Does a shower need a trap and how and where is the trap located?

Yes, a shower needs a p-trap. If there is no p-trap installed then the sewer gasses have a clear path into your home. Any drain in your home needs a p-trap so there is standing water to block the gasses from floating through your drain and I to your house.

Improved answer

A trap does NOT have to be always "P" trap There are running traps J traps , LA traps depending on the application .. Showers and bath tub normally have a P trap main sewers and storm drains can have a running trap

Why is home row called home row?

In my younger days,we had row houses. They were all in a row and all looked the same. as in mill hill houses. The mills would build houses and rent them to the mill workers. There is an old saying "I owe my soul to the company store" this also came from the mill hill villages where the mills owned the houses, stores, everything!!

ADDED: As a Transatlantic difference, if these what I think they are - all joined into a long, single building - in the UK they are called "terraced" houses. Although an 18C concept they did become particularly associated with 19C industrial (not just mill) towns, but a lot of modern housing developments now are of terraced form.

The "company store" ethos was used in Britain too, but its inherent unfairness led to its legal abolishment under a 19C law I think called the "Truck Acts".

What is the best kitchen sink?

There are many aspects of the kitchen sink that you must consider when deciding the best kitchen sink for your kitchen, including material and style (e.g., shape, depth, and mount type).

  • There are 4 main types of sink material: stainless steel, enameled cast iron, quartz, and solid surface. Of the three, stainless steel is the most popular because it is easy to clean up and matches most high-end kitchen appliances.
  • Similarly, sinks come in different styles -- single, double, or even triple bowls. Obviously, the triple bowl offers the most utility (for washing in one sink, rinsing in another, plus a small prep sink in the middle) and is also generally the most expensive.
  • Kitchen depth also impacts utility as deeper sinks holds larger pans and pots.
  • Finally, there are 3 main type of mounts -- undermount, drop-in, and solid piece. of the three, undermount is the most popular, as it allows for easy cleanup as you can wipe right into the sink without worrying about the lip.

The best kitchen sink for your kitchen will depend on your kitchen look, feel, and style, in addition to your kitchen working habits. The aforementioned factors -- material and style -- are helpful for determining the best kitchen sink for your needs.

Can you install wooden floors over ceramic tile?

You are better off ripping out the tiles first. If you really want to lay the hardwood over the tiles, first lay down 3/4 plywood so you have something to staple the new floor to. The ply is glued down with PL, and then screwed into the tiles/sub floor. You will need to pre drill with a masonary bit, and screw in every 12 inches. Seems like more work than ripping the tiles out. And adds an extra 3/4 + tile height + hardwood - how will that transition to other rooms?

What should i choose asphalt or concrete for my entrée de garage(driveway)?

We have had both. Concrete tends to look better and hold up longer, but the surface stones can pop out and the concrete can crack. It is more expensive to install than concrete. We paid additional for a formula that would have fewer surface pops.

New asphalt driveways look nice, too. There are pros and cons to sealing them every year. Sealants give the driveway a new look but don't necessarily prolong the life of the driveway. The surface of an asphalt driveway can become uneven and will crack. Tire pivot points will wear and tire depressions will form where vehicles are regularly parked. The dark color can be a heat sink due to sun exposure and can actually soften with the heat That can be a negative during a hot summer, but our south-facing asphalt driveway seemed to finish snow removal jobs by melting whatever remained. Asphalt is less expensive, but generally needs to be replaced more often than concrete.

Some folks have gone to using paving bricks in driveways. That looks nice, but you have to fight weeks growing in the cracks and it makes for a noisy and bumpy ride for anything wheeled across it. (think wheeled garbage bins or luggage).

Whichever driveway you choose, you need to do your homework on the proper installation and watch that your contractor adheres to those parameters. Also check the contractor's guarantees and reputation. We had to take one contractor to court because an asphalt driveway was installed cold and didn't last a year.

Should you buy an American Standard bathroom sink or a Kohler bathroom sink?

Both manufacture excellent products and both have inexpensive "contractor grade" products as well. In general, just find something that you like and try to get the best price you can.

ANS 2 - Both are good products, but so are Mansfield, Porcher, Toto, Franke, Blanco.

I'd recommend visiting a couple of plumbing products showrooms there are many lovely and practical sinks
