Often Arabs try to link these conflicts to show that Western Imperialist powers are the reason that they cannot succeed. Of course, this fails to take into account that Israel is not an imperialist power. (It has no foreign colonies.) This also fails to take into account the very different motivations behind the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Iraq War.

If we truly wanted energy independence we would use the largest reserves known to man. The Green Valley reserve which covers Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico holds far more oil then the entire middle east. We know that 4 trillion barrels alone are in this reserve. We have another reserve in the United States that covers North Dakota which, while not as large has more oil then all the middle east also.

The issue is twofold though. One the left extreme wants us to leave the land natural and the right would rather use the cheaper oil in the Middle East. If we really wanted energy independence, this oil would be used as we speak.

As for the Al-Anfal Campaign (which is the "polite" term for the Genocide of Iraqi Kurds), in December 2006 Saddam was put on trial for the genocide during Operation Anfal. The trial for the Anfal campaign was still underway on December 30, 2006, when Saddam Hussein was executed for his role in the unrelated Dujail Massacre.

The Anfal trial recessed on December 21, 2006, and when it resumed on January 8, 2007, the remaining charges against Saddam Hussein were dropped since he was now dead. Six co-defendants continued to stand trial for their roles in the Anfal campaign. On 23 June 2007 Ali Hassan al-Majid, and two co-defendants Sultan Hashem Ahmed and Hussein Rashid Mohammed were convicted of genocide and related charges and sentenced to death by hanging. Another two co-defendants (Farhan Jubouri and Saber Abdel Aziz al-Douri) were sentenced to life imprisonment, and one (Taher Tawfiq al-Ani) was acquitted on prosecution's demand.
