What is the Socratic Method and what is its legacy?

It means of, by, or pertaining to the Greek philosopher Socrates. It is a pedagogical technique in which a teacher does not give information directly but instead asks a series of questions, with the result that the student either comes to the desired knowledge by answering the questions, or finds a deeper awareness of the limits of knowledge.

It is a form of teaching that allows the student to realize the answer through inductive reasoning, this in my personal belief is a better form of teaching then the standard. This way it allows the student to find the answer rather that be taught it and inspired to memorize it. This inductive reasoning skates the fine line of experience vs knowledge. It does so in a way through base definition of experience, being self discovery and first hand thought. The Socratic method is nothing but the emphasis of self discovery and firsthand thought.

It is a style of teaching that uses questions to find the truth.

Socrates sometimes referred to himself as a midwife for ideas. In schools and schooling, the term Socratic Method has broadened to mean "assisting discovery" and "shared inquiry." The teacher becomes more of a facilitator rather than a lecturer or dispenser or information.

It is talking through an important question to see what you really know, what you think you know, and what assumptions you are working under. Dr Peter Kreeft has written several wonderful books in philosophy using Socrates talking to some other great philosopher in a fictional Socratic Method exchange.

Socrates Meets Machiavelli

...Marx...

...Kant

...Descartes

...Sartre

The last-named book is typical : "Journeying through the world of existentialist philosophy, Kreeft poses questions that challenge the concepts proposed by Sartre. Based on an imaginary dialogue between Socrates and the French philosopher in the afterlife, this witty book is an entertaining and informative exploration of modern philosophy."
