LEAK TESTING A FORD/LINCOLN AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM
PRINTER FRIENDLY
The Ford shop manual recommends performing a soapy water solution for air suspension leak testing. While this is the absolute sure-fire way to leak test, if you don't have the right equipment and/or experience, the results of your test may not be conclusive. The equipment I'm speaking of is not the soapy water solution, but more the vehicle lifting equipment needed to allow you to get under the car and see most of the air spring/strut...."WHILE THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR IS ON THE AIR SPRINGS/STRUTS". An example of this would be a front end rack. The kind of rack that is used to align a vehicle and that the technician has to drive the car up onto. If the rear of the car is on the ground, you can't safely get under it to visibly see all around the air spring/strut. Using a front end rack, you can lift the vehicle up in the air and safely see the entire rubber bladder while performing the test. The problem is, most novice mechanics don't have access to a front end rack. With that being said, I have a much easier and safer approach to leak testing. I will explain this later on, but first I want to explain a few things.
First of all, the rubber used on the air spring/strut gets dry rotted mostly on the fold of the rubber, or where the rubber folds around on the bottom. This folded area of the rubber gets the blunt of the punishment and dry rots at a much faster rate than the rest of the rubber. Because this area dry rots faster than the rest, this is where your leak is going to be 99.9% of the time.
The reason the air spring/strut will leak sometime and not others, has allot to do with temperature and most importantly, where the fold of the rubber is. The area of the rubber that's on the fold, will change with vehicle height. In other words, the fold of the rubber will be in a different area while the car is being driven (city height) as opposed to when it is sitting still (vented or parked height). If the dry rotted area of the rubber is "On the Fold", this will open up any cracks in the rubber and allow air to escape.
Keep in mind that ALL the air springs/struts have their own solenoid. The solenoid acts as a gate for air. No air should go in or out unless the solenoid is opened up by the module. By turning the suspension switch off, your disabling the solenoids, thus no air should escape....unless of course theres a leak.
THE "EASY WAY" TO FIND A LEAK
By far, the easiest way to test for a leak, is to allow the car to vent down after shutting off the engine and opening and closing the door.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THE CAR HAS LOWERED PRIOR TO TURNING THE SUSPENSION SWITCH OFF, OR THE TEST WON'T BE ACCURATE!
If nothing else, wait 5 minutes after you turn the ignition off...then turn the suspension switch off. The car should have vented by then.
After this, turn the suspension switch off and measure the height of the 4 corners of the car with a tape measure and write it down.
Now drive the vehicle for a few days.
If the vehicle has a leak, the car should go down after driving.
NOTE: Depending on the severity of the leak, it may take more than one day to leak down. This is the case more times than you would think.
By all means, if the car goes down after 10 minutes of driving, turn the switch back and resume your journey. You have answered your question.

COULD IT BE JUST A SOLENOID LEAK?
Its been my experience as a former Ford/Lincoln factory trained and certified technician, that if the solenoid has never been removed before, most likely the leak isn't from the o-rings that seal the solenoid to the air spring/strut. Now if the solenoid had EVER been removed before, the o-rings should have been replaced at that time. If you have an old o-ring that has never seen the light of day and all of the sudden, after 10 years of being cooped up, it is released from tension, it will expand. If reused, it WILL eventually cause a leak . It might take a day, a month, or even a year, but it WILL leak at some time down the road.
In other words, if you replace your air springs, make sure you replace the 2 x o-rings that seal the solenoid to the air spring/strut. If you don't, its not a matter of "IF" it will leak, but more like "WHEN". It would be in your best interest to also replace the little o-ring that seals the air line to the solenoid at the same time. Because this o-ring is AFTER the actual sealing part of the solenoid, if this o-ring leaks, it will only affect the operation of the system while the solenoid is opened, like when the module is making a height adjustment. Not while sitting overnight!

What could be wrong with a 2000 Lincoln LS if the engine light on the dash will not go off?
To find out what is wrong with it you will have to take it to a repair shop or the ford dealer with a computer to hook it up, but the engine light being on something is wrong with the car, it kinda sounds like a ingition coil pack going out, if so it will only get worse and could also be many other little things, but it must be repaired before the light will go off, and needs to be repairs ASAP so it doesnt cause anymore damage, that is why the light came on is for it to be serviced and repairs ASAP.
I have the same problem with a 2001 LS V8 sport. They diagnosed this earlier this year when I felt a subtle pulsing in the car during heavy acceleration. They said they must change both according to Lincoln service number SSM 512 481 091 and replace BOTH pumps (which shocked me to find there was two). They listed the pumps as YW42-9275-BC and YW42-9H307-BA. Apparently these cross reference to part number E2274M from Airtex but I'll know more soon as it is on order from my local jobber. I do know that if you order a 'pump' from A/C number MU2013 you will get a sender unit only which is listed improperly (and probably why the Airtex costs about 25% more). One other item the dealer replaced on my LS was the Idle solonoid but that shouldn't impact the car while driving, just while idling.
How do you reset the inertia switch on 2001 Lincoln ls?
On a 2001 Lincoln LS :
The fuel pump inertia switch ( shut off switch ) is located in the drivers footwell
behind the kick panel ( there is an access hole )
- if you don't see any gas leaking or smell gas , push the reset button DOWN that has popped up on the top of the switch
- turn your ignition key to the RUN position for a few seconds and then turn your ignition key to the OFF position
- make another check for any gas leaking or the smell of gas , if none , go ahead and start the engine
Where is windshield washer pump located on 2000 Lincoln LS?
Lower Right Front end, in front of wheel. Smapp under panel needs partial removal and pump is set into the ws washer bottle with a two prong wire connector and washer hose connected to it.
Where do you disconnect the windshield wipers at on 2000 Lincoln LS?
The 2000 Lincoln LS has the most common windshield wiper arm attachments: U-Hook. Pull/Move the arm away from the glass and lock it into the up position. Normally with this attachment, you will see a little tab on the piece that is inserted into the hook end of the arm. Depress that tab, and pull the wiper blade assembly down, out of the tab. You may have to rotate and flex the blade a little bit to create the clearance to remove the wiper assembly out of the hook.
Be sure you get the right replacement wiper blades. The 2000 Lincoln LS takes 24" drivers side and 19" passenger side replacement windshield wiper blades. Note however, when buying windshield wiper blades be sure to always look up your vehicle make, model and year in the application guide book at the store, or now-a-days you can Google 'lookup wiper size'.
The replacement wiper blades will come with simple-to-follow, step-by-step, illustrated removal and installation instructions.
How much will an abs control module cost for your Lincoln ls aith advanced trac?
I just brought my Lincoln LS to the dealer. I'm being charged $900.00 plus labor. This is going to be an $1,100.00 repair! Dealers these days seem to put a minimum charge of at least $1,000.00 to every car that comes into their shop.
Where is the battery located on a 2004 Lincoln LS?
It is located in the truck next to the spare tire. Lift truck floor board and you will see it.
Where is the valve to add freon to the 2000 Lincoln ls?
The proper way is to evacuate all the freon first and then refill it to the factory spec. There should be a silver looking canister on the left side of the car, connected to that canister should be some silver lines, theses are your a/c lines. now follow those lines. There are going to be two valves that protrude from the metal lines, one from each. These are called your high side service port, and your low side service port. Most commonly the high side has a red cap, and the low side has a blue cap. Specifically, for the 390 engine, to get to the LOW side one needs to remove the splash panel under the car. The valve is on the driver's side near the compressor and is horizontal and points to the outside of the car. Mine has a black cap on it. The HIGH side valve is on the passenger side near the radiator and is clearly visible. Mine has a black cap on it as well. Acquire a set of r134a refrigerant gauges and attach them to the service ports. The blue hose attaches to the low side, the red hose to the high side, and the yellow is connected to your freon source. Turn your air conditioning on to the highest setting, set all the way to cold. If your system has a "max a/c", turn that on as well. After a minute or two, read your gauges High side should be in the approximation of 200-350psi, low side between 25-35psi. NOTE: these numbers are APPROXIMATION. The specifications for your particular vehicle should be followed. The freon is added to the LOW side while your system is running. Adding freon to the high side while your system is operating can cause your freon can to explode.
Why on your Lincoln LS sometime blows out hot air when the air is on?
The heater control valve is bad.
Sometimes the dual heater control valve will go and the AC will blow full heat.
Where do I add freon in a 2003 lincoln ls V6 Base Model?
It contains no Freon. It contains R134a refrigerant and you add it to the low pressure port which is the larger pipe.
It either means that your seatbelt is not fastened, or if it is, the fuse for it could be blown.
