Literary Devices and Figures of Speech

Rhetorical techniques are different techniques used in essays or to improve them.The rhetorical techniques are

1. Diction-Word choice
2. Syntax- Grammatical design of a sentence
3. Organization- Order in which you write your essay. Ex. Chronological,flashback etc. (cant rememba the rest)
4. Tone & Attitude- Attitude author takes toward the subject
5. Point of View- 3rd person(using he ,she ,it),3rd person omiscient(using he, she it, and when the reader knows more about the story than the characters), Stream-Line Objective(where the character expresses random thoughts) & another 1 (cant rememba name) where you read the characters mind

This may be called "just the reverse"

E.g. I thought they would take opposite sides but just the reverse happened.

In literature, the term irony or situational ironyis used to mean that things turn out the opposite from the way they might be expected to. In other instances the word irony means unanticipated but appropriate (e.g. a thief is robbed, a terrible film becomes a cult favorite).

Language not meant to be taken literally.

For example: you are what you eat is not meant to be taken literally, its not like if you eat a hot dog you are a hot dog! haha that would be literal, but luckily that's not possible.

figurative language is a simile it is when someone/you compare it to something/someone

example:she is as tall as a tree

Many glossaries of literary terms do not distinguish between tone and mood, attributing to them the same definition.

The feeling that the story induces in the reader.

Some glossaries how do have separate connotations for the two terms.

• Tone: the attitude portrayed by the narrator of the story. As in 'tone of voice'.
• Mood: the feeling, tension or emotions conveyed by the characters in the story.

Adages are quotes, sayings, phrases and advice that are meant to be wise or true.
