A woman Mayor or other personage of political title is referred to as The Honourable, whomever.

A woman of the cloth is address as Story, Reverend, Sister, Reverend Mother, Rabbi, etc.

A woman in any branch of the Armed Forces is addressed by her rank or simply Ma'am.

If you are referring to a woman who is married to a Lord or gentleman then the term Lady is used, often with her husband's (and these days her own) titled lands. ie. Alice, Lady Belfor.

Depending on the degree of formality in the letter it can be Mr. and Mrs. Smith, or John and Jane Smith.

Of course if the couple retained their pre-married names, you would use John Smith and Jane Doe (or Jane Doe and John Smith) ;)

For some, not all, good manners can be infectious because good manners in the right places polish the person's personality and rounds out their character. Just because some people may lead a life that is more laid back and they are not into high social events where manners are most expected doesn't mean that person is a lesser individual.

The purpose of manners is to make social interactions work more smoothly. When things go more smoothly, it increases the likelihood that people will consider the needs of others in addition to their own. Therefore, one person showing consideration for others can have a beneficial effect on everyone. However, manners are learned behavior, and it is unlikely that exposure to good manners will make a boorish person more mannerly unless that person truly wants to learn and change.

You say the same as you would to anyone. If a person has had a tough life, I'm sure that cheerful subject matter is always welcome. If all the person wants to talk about is their tough life, just be patient and let them talk. You only need to say something if asked. Don't forget, about half the people you will meet in your life will have had a 'tough' life, you just won't be aware of it.

It is rude for the receiver of an invitation to not answer the mailed invitation or at least phone or email the person to let them know if they are coming or not. However, it is more common than one thinks. The best thing to telephone that person and if they do not answer after two attempts then email them (keep the email) and if they do not respond cross them off your list of guests. If they try to come to the event then it's fine to tell them they had not answered their invitation and 'no admittance.'
