You should be using Mobil 1 in your engine. With that, about 10,000 miles should be fine. And make sure to replace the oil filter as well...use OEM filters. From my experience, after market filters are no where close to OEM.

If you're not using Mobil 1, 3000 miles is recommended.

Also, depending on your mileage...you should check the other fluids, such as: Power Steering, brake fluid...check the color...if it's not clear, its time to flush the system. Also, most importantly, check the last time your trans was serviced. If its more than 40,000, change the oil and filter...this is considerably less mileage than MB suggests, but these new transmissions will last a lot longer with 40k services. Check the rear end fluid and if the fuel filter has more than 40k on it, change it.

The 129R with the 6 cylinder engine - the 300SL - has a timing chain. Please note also that Mercedes Benz makes a modified tensioner(s) to correct a problem with the chain rubbing on the cover.

The fuse box is located in the footwell of the drivers side by the accellorator pedal. They simply pop out

First make sure you have gas in it! Then the fuel pump needs to run, it is back under the trunk near the differential, paired with a filter. If pump not running, try the relay behind the glove box.

To be certain it is a fuel issue, first remove the air cleaner and squirt some starter fluid down the throat and give it try.

If you have gas and the pump is running, the fuel distributor may be blocked, located under the air filter housing.

Try replacing the OVP regulator or check that fuse. The regulator controls things like idle, fuel mix, etc. If you jump started your baby after storing for a while it usually blows this fuse. The regulator is found just to the right of the fuse box in the passenger well. Remove the lower dash and you should see 3 regulators closest to the door opening. One of them should have a red plastic cap on it. Pull out the whole regulator (note which way is up for replacing it). There is a 10 amp (probably blue) GM looking fuse in the regulator. Check to see if it is blown. If so, this is likely a major issue. The car will run without it but not very well. If it is not blown, try replacing the whole regulator. eBay about $25.

Your 86 Corvette came from the factory with a small ratchet wrench with a star driver attached to it for top removal. If you can't find one in your car, they can be purchased on Ebay for about $30. Assuming that you have a wrench, you will note one hole just behind the sunvisor on each side. Completely lower both driver and passenger windows and open the rear hatch. The wrench can now be used; slide the star socket upward into the vertical holes until it engages into a hidden screw. Now turn the wrench counter clockwise until there is no resistance.

The third and fourth bolts are above the headrests in the rear edge of the removable top. These holes are horizontal. Insert the star driver into each hole and turn counterclockwise until there is no resistance. You should now be able to lift the top, (use two people if possible) and remove it from the vehicle.

Now turn the roof 180 degrees (front to back) and slide the roof panel into the holders under the open rear hatch. If all else fails review the owners manual. Lots of luck!

Remember always start with the cheapest solution, in this case a/c fuse.

Happened to me. Find the drier, behind drivers side headlight. Its a black cylinder with the refrigerant lines going in and out. Take the wires (they are black, 90 degree angle) off the drier switch (larger sensor at top of drier) and jump them with paper clip to see if compressor will engage. If so, switch may be bad. Also, inside of footwell, under the steering wheel area, drivers side, the evaporator temp sensor could have gone bad. You will have to remove under steering wheel cover to access temp sensor. If faulty, will not let the compressor engage. Likely cause, pressure switch.

The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine.

I believe the '84's have a 4 speed transmission in them. I think that the neutral switch is on the left side of the transmission, or maybe the other side...doesn't matter. You'll see it when you get underneath the car.

Have you checked the shift linkage yet? If the shifter inside the car seem very sloppy to the touch, and is hard to use, you might have bushing problems on the linkage, and that would hinder the trans from going into neutral. Thos bushings are about a dollar each, but putting them in is a real bitch...you need 2 of those.

If it is the switch...before you start tearing things apart, get a switch from your local dealer. Disconnect the wires to the switch and remove the switch from the side of the trans. Make sure everything is clean before instering the new switch...bolt it up and you're done...its a fairly simple proceedure

firing order for 73 mercadies 300sel 4.5

first you take out the mechanical backup key. just push the small slider on top of the key and pull out the key. inside, just below the top, a small ridge should be visible. on my key (black) there is a white clip. you have to push it in (with a small screwdriver) and pull out the key top. first time it's kinda tricky, was for me at least. when you pull it out, there should be two 3V batteries inside. !!! WATCH THE POLARITY !!! change them, fit the slider back in until it clips, and take care with the sliders bottom part (the one that fits into the casing). fit the valet back in, and you're ready to go :) PS: some kind of safety sometimes wont let you open the car by remote after the battery change. you just have to pull out the batteries inside the car, and you'll have no problem. even if you change it at home, and it wont open the car, just pull the batteries out and refit them again.

There can be many reasons...but, and this sounds strange...check that everything is right with the 4 way hazard switch wiring. Everything runs through there...on mine, with that switch on the center counsol...just the vibration and movement of the wood piece its in causes the problem. I have to get under and push all the ires back in.

as long as you place the positive to the positive and the negative to the frame of the car with the good battery, you can jump start any car.

There is a pull\slide type lever in the kick panel on the bottom left side. Once you pull that the the hood should pop up. There is a safety catch on the inside left of the Mercedes emblem that is kind hard to see if you don't know its there. It will be on the top left side & just squeeze it, pull it towards grill & lift hood. Hope this helps.

OPEN THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR. STANDING IN FRONT OF YOUR CAR, ON YOUR RIGHT, IN FRONT OF THE CYLINDER BANK THERE IS A SMALL LOOKING CYLINDER WITH A SMALL, BLACK PLASTIC NUT. THERE'S A FAN BELT ATTACHED TO THE PULLEY OF THIS CYLINDER. THIS IS THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR. WHEN YOU DO CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL, THE ENGINE SHOULD BE AT AN IDLE. THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE AROUND 10MM FROM THE TOP. UNLESS YOU FIND POWER STEERING FLUID ON THE GROUND, OR ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, YOU SHOULDN'T NEED OIL. BUT ITS ALWAYS GOOD TO CHECK ALL LEVELS ON A REGULAR BASIS.

The first thing I have to say is...if you don't know where the starter motor is after looking for it, I suggest you don't work on this car. OK...now that you're pissed off at me....pop the hood. On the right side of the car, look at the end of the cylinder head...now, look straight down. If you bend down enough, you can get a peek at it. Its down there. You have to be under the car to access this unit. If you're replacing the starter/solenoid because you're not able to start your car...you might also want to check out the ignition switch. Its a two part switch that can be the cause as well. Is the key very loose when inserted into the slot? Does the radio or other Accessory devices turn on by themselves? Have you checked the big thick battery cable and other electrical connections. Make sure there are clean and secure connections

you don't want to try this yourself. its hard enough for professionals to install a 129 soft top properly, and if you've never installed a canvas top before, they are a nightmare...trust me on that. These tops also have an inner liner.

There is far too much intricate concerened areas to do this yourself. And at the end, you'll probably ruin the new soft top, and never get it installed properly...and for the $200.00 it will most likely cost you, it's worth it.
