How much does a full set of motocross gear cost?

The answer depends on the quality of the gear your looking for, and how much you willing to spend. another factor is the optional protection.

heres some estimates.

helmet: $90-$600

goggles: $25-$60

neckbrace: $100-$400 (optional, but highly reccomended)

chest protector: $75-$100 (also option and highly reccomended)

jearsey: $20-$40

pants: $90-$200

gloves: $15-$50

boots: $100-$500

knee pads: $15-$30

socks: $15-$25

So for top of the line, fanciest gear possible, your looking around $1500-$2000

i normally spend about $500 a year on gear. helmets, boots, neckbraces and chest protectors will last you awhile so you hardly ever will have to pay the $1500 at one time. if you new, start off with the cheap stuff. that way your only spending a couple hundred on gear. guys i race with, that have the gaerne boots, nad shoei helmts(those alone are around $1000) probably spend more than a few thousand a year on gear. if you have the extra money, don't hesitate to buy some spare gear.

like..

3 goggles, 2 jearseys, 2 helmets, 2 pairs of riding socks, 2 pairs kneepads.. etc.. just in case something breaks or gets lost. Hope this helps :D

Is 5ft 7'' to big for a kx 85 big wheel?

You would fit, but if you're still growing, I'd recommend a bigger bike such as a 125cc. If you're stuck on two stroke bikes (like me) then you should buy a used 85cc because you will grow and need to switch to a 250cc in about a year.

How do you whip on a dirt bike?

Apply pressure (leverage) to the foot pegs/seat/frame/tank/handlebars in different combinations to vary the severity of the "cross-up". Take off from the jump at a non verticle angle (leaned over). Usually have to apply opposite pressure/sequence to return bike to proper angle for a safe landing.

What is a motocross whip?

A whip is when the rider rotates the motorcycle sideways in a "whipping" motion while in the air.

What does a expansion chamber do for a dirt bike?

it is used to increase the horsepower of the engine (see this page for a photo). This technique only works on two-stroke engines, which is why you see it on a lot of dirt bikes but not on street bikes. Most street bikes use four-stroke engines.

The basic idea behind an expansion chamber is to use the momentum and pressure of the exhaust gases to create a pumpthat squeezes more air and fuel into the cylinder during the intake stroke. It does the same sort of thing that a turbocharger does, but it does it without moving parts.

If you have read How Two-stroke Engines Work, then you know that the exhaust and intake parts of the cycle overlap. As the piston moves down, it uncovers the exhaust port first to let most of the exhaust out. Then it opens the intake port to let fuel/oil/air in. With a correctly-tuned expansion chamber in place, two things happen to help the intake process:

  • As the exhaust gases expand into the expansion chamber, they create a vacuum at the exhaust port. This vacuum pulls fuel/oil/air into the cylinder.
  • As the shock wave of the exhaust pulse hits the end of the expansion chamber, it echoes back, pushing any fuel/oil/air that got pulled through the exhaust port back into the cylinder. This page has a nice graphic that describes the process.

By pulling extra fuel/oil/air through the cylinder and then pushing it back in, the expansion port has the effect of stuffing more fuel/oil/air into the cylinder on each stroke. This gives the engine extra power in the same way that a turbocharger does.
