Mufflers and Tailpipes

I wouldn't have thought exhaust end-can packing would significantly increase power output, or reduce back-pressure. That is normally dealt with by the tuned length of the pipe itself and overall diameter of the exhaust-can internals. Removing the packing will obviously make it noisier, reduce any heat build-up and possible reduce the weight, but only a little. Other than that I don't think there will be much in the way of performance enhancements to be gained. If you however remove the internal pipe work inside the exhaust-can and install a straight-through internal pipe, with custom packaging I would have thought this would give more impressive power gains. The first area for exhaust modifications on a modern bike should really be at the Catalyst end. This device reduces power output, increases weight and heat.

Depending on your car this is pretty easy.

First you need to raise the rear end of the vehicle about 24 inches and rest it on sturdy jack-stands. (Never work under any vehicle supported only by its jack.) Make sure you are on firm ground or a concrete slab so the jack-stands will not shift. Choke the front tires so they can't roll when the rear end is up in the air. Jack up the rear of the vehicle on one side and place a stand under a solid part of the chassis but out of the way of your work. Lower the vehicle onto the stand, making adjustments as the stand takes the whole weight of the vehicle. Repeat for the other side. For safety, put the spare tire under the tire of the side you're working under, in case of a jack-stand failure.

There's probably going to be a U-bolt or some kind of piece holding the intake side of the muffler to the pipe. I would recommend first going to Auto Zone or another parts dealer and telling exactly what kind of car you have.

Generally the people that work there will actually go and look under your car and see for themselves. There are different size openings on mufflers so you MAY want to measure both holes on the muffler just to have that extra info. You probably wont need it. Mufflers usually cost less than $20 or so.

Once you get it home just take that U-bolt off, slide the old one out, slide the new one on, clamp the u-bolt back and your done. There may be another bracket that keeps the very back of the muffler off the ground so that will need to be put back also. You may need a new tailpiece for your muffler if its rusty. This is one of those simple repairs that is really fundamental. I have seen some crazy ones that have housings over them and the exhaust, but that is a different story.

I would suspect a blown head gasket. This is very serious, so if it checked out ASAP, and stop driving the car until you know for sure.

well i don't know much about that but from what i understand if the block is at the tip it may leak around the block or blow it out or go backwards and hit the engine.Now if its close to your engine more then likely it will shoot backwards and hit your engine.Either way you will mess up the engine eventually. sorry about grammer i just woke up :)

Not necessarily, but the biggest concern would be carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust leaking through the floorboard. There is an extremely high risk. Many state laws consider the act aggrivated reckless endangerment

White smoke is a sign that coolant is entering the combustion chamber. This is commonly caused by a cracked head or blown head gasket or both. This is a very serious condition that requires you STOP running this engine immediately. Severe engine damage will occur if you continue to operate this engine. The head must be removed to repair this problem. If you are going to drive it somewhere for repair that is not over a couple of miles, change the oil/filter and drive it for repair. If it is over a couple of miles have it towed in for repair. If you have been driving the car in this condition for very long, then you probably have done severe damage to the engine and it will require a major overhaul. Once it is opened up a determination can be made as to how bad the damage is.

You are either using the wrong muffler or the threads are pretty much well gone. If the problem is that the threads are worn, u can use a strip of aluminun foil to wrap around the thread similar to how teflon tape is used to seal thread on pipes.

When you start the car, the hot exhaust condenses on the interior of the cold exhaust system. This is normal for a few minutes until the exhaust system warms up. If the water smells and taste sweet, and you are continually adding coolant, you may have a blown head gasket. If this is the case, do not continue to drive the vehicle as serious damage will be done to the engine.

If your talking about it doing that after you have turned off the engine then yes. That's just the hot exhaust pipes and catalytic converter contracting as they cool.

Main causes of exhaust holes are created to acidic chemicals generated by the working diesel or gas engine on combustion of the air/fuel mixture such as sulphur dioxide &carbon monoxide, and water vapour. The latter condenses from steam back into water along the length of the exhaust tube.The acidic properties with water'eat' or oxidise on the steel exhaust eventually leading to pin hole rusting. One answer is to use stainless steel instead of ordinary steel which givesa longer life expectancy, although more expensive.

Of course it cannot be coolant . . . the engine heat would boil it off quite quickly.

However, the exhaust gases from an engine contain water vapor. This water vapor cools when it contacts the much cooler tail pipe, and gives up some of itself as liquid water. This is the water you see coming out of the tailpipe. Once the tailpipe heats up, you don't see that water, anymore.

This is very similar to water vapor in the air condensing on a cold glass of lemonade or coke. The water vapor in the air is cooled by the cold glass, and gives up some of itself as liquid water. This is also what causes dew droplets to form on the ground on plants.

Properly installed, that system is good for about a 10% bump in horsepower...so figure about 15 hp give or take a few ponies. The system is very LOUD so be prepared to wake the neighbors.

Gas is one of the states of matter. Matter has weight and takes up space. When rocket propellants are burned or oxidized, they give off expanding gases. Since gas is matter the expanding gases exert force.

Modern vehicles are equipped with catalytic converters. Catalytic converters use heat and oxygen to strip atoms off of exhaust gas molecules. Nitrides of oxygen a.k.a N20 are separated into nitrogen and oxygen molecules, hydrocarbons a.k.a HC3 are stripped into hydrogen and carbon molecules the heat combined with the presence of hydrogen and oxygen causes the two to combine in to a new molecule H2O a.k.a water. A little water from your exhaust system is actually a good thing, it means your catalytic converter is performing properly.
