Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What does blue smoke from the exhaust mean?

Well unfortunately you can count on it meaning you'll have to get your wallet ready for a workout. Blue smoke could indicate a few different things I guess. However it is my own experiences that tell me what is happening is your motor oil is leaking past your piston rings and getting into the engine cylinder and mixing with your fuel and ultimately burning along with the gas. That leakage is getting compressed with the gasoline in the combustion chamber and the burned oil makes the blue smoke. Your car probably also doesn't have as much power as it used to and is probably running rather rough too. If it isn't yet it wont be long and it will evetually cause the oil to break down loseing its viscocity and not properly lubricateing the pistons. Because what is also happening is some of the gas is leaking past those rings too in the opposite direction and mixing with the oil in your crankcase and thinning it out. When this happens the engine will overheat from excessive friction and it will seize.

They used to do ring and valve jobs to fix the problem. But that is "old school" and we now live in a disposable society and most every shop around will recommend a newly rebuilt engine. With shop rates being as much as $125 an hour, the rebuilt motor is much more cost effective. I'm sorry to be the messenger of the bad news.

This means that you should just sell your car while you can, so that you don' t get stuck with it.

Why does a tailpipe emit oil?

That doesn't sound good. These symptoms are a good indication that your piston rings are gone or you have a damaged head gasket. With worn piston rings oil is allowed past the piston and into the combustion chamber allowing it to be burnt with the fuel air mixture, this also allows combustion pressure to be leaked into the crankcase pressurising the engine and forcing oil out from any older perished gaskets. However the same symptoms can be found by having a damaged head gasket where the oil gallerys between the head and the block that are normally sealed together by the headgasket, leak and allow oil to enter the cylinders and be burnt. In both instances it requires a lot of expensive mechanical work to recondition the engine. There are additives on the market that thicken the oil and lessen the amount of smoke but are only a band aid solution and won't save you from an expensive repair later down the road.

Another Cause

Notwithstanding the above answers, a common cause on modern engines is the failure of the turbo seals. Oil gets sucked into the inlet manifold. There is often too much to burn so it gets blown out the back. Take the hose off the intercooler; if it drips oil suspect the turbo.

Whatever the cause, the catalytic converter (if fitted) might also need to be replaced.

What causes a weird flapping noise coming out of one pipe on a dual glass pack exhaust?

It could just be that you are burning out the packing inside the muffler, a flapping sound after a quick push on the accelerator probably means that the packing is already gone. could also be an indication of poor ignition on that side of the engine.

What will a bad muffler do to my car?

A bad muffler will do a few things to your car. First, it will make it louder. Second it will spew much more pollution into the atmosphere. This can also seep into your car and cause you to pass out from the fumes.

Do you need to tune for an aftermarket exhaust?

To be safe yes, and also to get the most from the exhaust system you should. So I'll just say yes, you do.

Why does your car blow white smoke?

Most times the WHITE smoke is actually steam from a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Usually bad news (cracked head, cracked block, leaking head gasket). If it is truly smoke, (doesnt readily dissipate), then more than likely its transmission fluid being drawn into the carburetor through a bad vacuum modulator valve on the transmission, not uncommon on older vehicles.

I have a 99 vauxhall frontera and the speedo has stopped working but the rev counter still works also I have black smoke coming from the exhaust when I rev it high?

hi the black smoke is your injectors should get them checked out.

if they are the electrical 1s, they charge to test them, if they the non machincal version its free to test them.

What could cause white smoke to come out of the exhaust of a 1989 240sx?

White smoke from the exhaust is a sign of coolant entering the combustion chamber. Usually a blown head gasket or cracked head. STOP driving the car immediately. Severe engine damage will occur if you continue to run this engine. Sounds like steam......you may be getting coolant into the combustion chamber.

Black soot coming out of tailpipe.?

Running rich, depending on year of vehicle it's possibly a o2 sensor, fuel system problem, carb if so equipped. Time for you to do some diagnostics

Will drilling holes in your exhaust give you the same effects as a performance exhaust?

NO...if you want to drill holes in your exhaust just to make it louder your only going to get a small grinding sound..not much of a difference..just makes ur exhaust sound like its about to fall off...BUT if you just simply buy a Glasspack for like 30 bucks and have it put on for like 40, or put it on yourself...then sound will not be a problem, youll have a nice grumble sound...as for performance exhausts..your paying for the internal part of the muffler system like the fiberglass and all the intricate crap.

What can cause white smoke from the coolant?

white smoke from coolant usually indicates oil in coolant, this usually means a blown headgasket

Can blue and white smoke coming out of the exhaust be do to bad gas?

No, it cannot. Blue smoke is a sign of oil burning, and white smoke is a sign of coolant entering the combustion chamber. You more than likely have a blown head gasket cracked head or both.

Why is my car blowing black an blue smoke and no power?

your car leaked oil into the combustion chamber. blue smoke= burnt oil, the loss of power is from inproper combustion
