How can you find scanner codes?
OBD has two common systems on vehicles. OBD1 for pre 96 & OBD2 for 96 & newer vehicles. So the first question is to identify which system is on the vehicle. There are various types of scanners or Scantools on the market, which are used to tap into the engines computer & list the codes which are causing the MIL ( check engine light) to come on. Once the code(s) are accessed, the general area of the fault is given by the code & it should be much easier to track down the problem component.
NOTE: the code given does not tell you how to fix the fault, it tells you what sensor to look at & sometimes where the problem is located & sometimes what the fault condition is. Just because a sensor is giving an out of tolerance reading does not automatically mean the sensor is faulty, but sometimes that is the case. Most times though, testing is required to verify the faulty component or associated part of the system.
To access codes it is generally as easy as plugging the scan tool into the vehicles datalink connector located either below the steering wheel (OBD2) or in the engine compartment (OBD1). Turn the ignition key on with the engine not running. Follow directions supplied with the scan tool, the job should take no more than 5 minutes. A good scan tool can do much more than pull codes. They can access all kinds of engine data from the sensors located around the engine. They can save you lots of money , or at the very least make you an INFORMED customer at the local garage!

The Fix
Best first action is a tune up, new plugs, wires, inspect all hoses and wire connections then reset the code. If it returns you will need to narrow it down to a system, coils and coil packs should be tested, catalytic converters for function ( do you smell rotten eggs?). A misfire that jumps cylinders could indicate a lean condition, do you have any other codes along with the 300? this will help clue you in to the source, check valve function to make sure they are opening and closing fully.
This is probably pone of the most difficult codes to troubleshoot, so start with the basics and work your way into the more expensive options, in many cases a good old tune up solves the problem, back it up with a fuel system cleaning and see where you stand.
