Anyways, the best thing to do to get some decent work room is to remove the hood. Since it is lightweight and only held in place with an air lift and 6 10mm bolts it is simple to do, though a second set of hands is a big help.

Next, you want to remove the plastic engine cover/heat shield, remove the 4 13mm plastic nuts and slip it off to access the top of the engine.

After that, you will want to remove the large trapezoidal vacuum canister above the coils to get more room. If you accidentally pull the vacuum line from it, it'll be fine just reconnect it afterwards.

One more step that helped, but is potentially risky on older vehicles is to pull the PCV line assembly. On older cars, it can snap like a twig and leave you calling around to find the pricey pre-molded hose. Do this at your own risk and use good judgement beforehand. It was no problem with the one I worked on, but it may not be your case.

Now that you got access to the coil block, remove the 4 electrical connectors (2 on each side) and go ahead and pull the wires. If replacing the coil(s), make sure to label them in the same order with a paint marker or similar (save you a lot of headaches down the road). The plug wires are basically 4 long and 4 short ones with only like 1 or two oddballs so it might help to match lengths as you pull them.

Now that the coil block is pretty much freed, remove the 4 10mm bolts holding it down and carefully remove it from the engine compartment. From here you should see easy access to the sparkplugs. A littletip when installing new plugs in the rear is to use a swivel extension and don't use a plug socket with a rubber boot in it that could make the socket get stuck in the engine on the sparkplug (was a royal pain to retrieve, but problem was solved when I just used a regular 5/8" deep socket).

From here, you should be pretty much set, pull the old plugs and install new ones, then wires ad if necessary, coils. Don't forget to lubricate the threads of the plugs as well as gap them properly with a wire type gapper. Dielectric grease sould've come with your wires, make sure to use it as well. Also, the reccomended plugs for the 4.0L Northstar is AC Platinum's, I HIGHLY recommend using them.

Before putting everything back together, remember to test it first. Be sure anything that could fall into the engine or its components is secured and everything but the hood and engine cover is bolted down as well.

You remove four bolts from alternator taking off all hoses and remembering where you took off bolt plates(small plates that screws go into). You then remove three bolts on passenger side of alternator. Take off drive belt. You will have to replace it. You will use the tension pulley to replace the belt. It takes a little force.

Remove the button from the mirror stalk and glue the button to window with 'Loctite Auto Window Adhesive'. After 5 minutes or so fit the mirro onto the button. -BTW there are at least 2 ways this button attaches to mirror stalk. 1- a small allen screw,ans2 -a flat metal spring between the two parts.

It's under the back seat next to the battery. It's called the "ELC" (Electronic Level Control) . Micro relay 55

Normal operating temperature is between 185 and 235 degrees. I believe the ECM will enable the coolant fans at 235 degrees. The thermostat opens at 185 degrees.

on the 1995 aurora to change out the starter the top end has to be pulled the starter is internal it is located on the drivers side of the engine

I have a 96 and had the same issue. This car operates on a lower oil pressure system unlike most vehicles I have owned. I had my oil pressure switch replaced by a mechanic. This resulted in an increased LOW OIL pressure alarm event. I had him reinstall the original switch bringing me back to the less frequent alarms. These alarms continued everytime I was at idle. To resolve, I increased the oil weight. The recommended is 10w30. I went with a straight 30 weight and found that better. I could have raised the idle RPM to prevent pressure drop below 7 lbs thus avoiding the infamous LOW PRESSURE alarm at 5 or less lbs, but then I'd burn more of that "premium" gasoline. I have since reached the 140k mile mark without further issue and the engine is still running smooth. My pressure is averaging in the high 80's to low 90's at cold start and around 30 when hot last I checked. Thanks for the reminder.

Most of the time our issues are electrical wires. I must be lucky, I'd hate to have some of the issues a lot of us Aurora owners have. Like changing the oil pan gasket. ouch.

In the middle of your engine "V".

You cannot touch, see, do anything to the starter without removing the intake manifold (the big thing on top of the engine).

1st timers about 3.5 hours of work.

cost if you order online like me $110, but you have to wait for your part.

Dont forget to replace the intake manifold gastket.

also, make sure you torque the manifold on, or try your best to get the bolts evenly tightend.

Behind oil filter

Up to 2005 build, 10/40 semi synthetic.

From 2006 Build, 5/40 fully synthetic long life oil.

To work out build date, read the 10th digit of the chassis/frame/vin number. (starts WOlO or VSXO depending on age.)

if is a letter, or a number 5 or under, it's an up to 2005 build.

If it's a 6 or higher, it's a 2006 onwards build.

Failure to use fully synthetic oil in 2006 onwards Vauxhalls can cause engine damage, and also failure of diesel particulate filters (if fitted).

aurora over fuels and comes out the exhaust, it starts, runs about 10 to 15 seconds and quits.

check air conditioning system... if the duck bill hose is clogged, the evaporator condensation will leak into the car... good luck.

It is located on the rear of the engine (which is the driver side since it is a traverse mounted engine). It is driven off a pulley from the front bank camshaft, and is up top.There is a black cover over the drive belt, and it is not an easy change-kyou need a special tool to remove the pump itself from the housing, there is little room to work, and there are things in the way of bolts that have to be removed (just did this repair yesterday, not fun).

When coolant leaks on a hot engine it produces quite a bit of steam, and it looks like smoke. Make sure you aren't leaking coolant somewhere and if you are, take care of the problem before the engine is destroyed. It's usually a radiator hose or heater hose, but whatever you do, take care of the problem before driving it again.

We had the same problem with our '98 Aurora. Had It to several repair shops and to 2 G.M. dealers. We were chasing the wind. Changed all sorts of expensive parts not to mention a complete tune up. Would have gotten rid of the car but I didn't want to stick anyone. I decided to change the EGR valve because it had solved mystery problems on other cars. It worked like a charm. I had to take it off 6 months later and clean it as the problem returned. All is well now. The part is expensive about $250.00 but it can be put in in minutes

Same problem with my '98 Aurora. It had a blown intake manifold gasket making it run lean and die at idle. The gasket was expensive to replace (as all Aurora parts are) so I had them glue it instead. Worked like a charm and saved me 400 bucks.

Sometimes you have to remove the pump.

Yep, this is a hard one to find. It is located BEHIND THE CENTER OF INSTRUMENT PANEL.

The 1999 Oldsmobile headlamp module is located on the firewall in the engine compartment. The headlamp module will be on the drivers side of the firewall.
