When did archery become an Olympic sport?

Archery was a sport all the way back in medieval times, and perhaps all the back in ancient times.

People trained in various ways and especially in Medieval England, laws were passed to make archery practice mandatory, so people made sports and competitive events to turn the frustrating law into something fun, there are many examples of sport types that involved archery such as:

- Standard archery rounds such as Portsmouth rounds (like you'd see on a Robin Hood movie or something similar)

- Clout shooting (shoot as close as possible to a flag off in the distance)

- Coconut shy equivalent (shooting at various small objects which simulate French heads!)

- William Tell challenge (one unfortunate soul has an apple shot off of his head!)

- Splitting the wand (a broomstick size pole in the ground has to be shot at and split, this is harder than it sounds)

- Flight shooting (shoot as far as possible, simple as that)

- Hunting challenges (this one is more of a guess, but it is quite easy to imagine happening)

... And a few more I cannot remember.

The point is, archery has been a sport for a very long time, and I didn't even mention before that the Greeks probably had archery as an Olympic event, since they invented it, and archery usage was common practice back then as well.

(NOTE: I am a real archer and I am an expert on the subject)

What is the alternative name for the bullseye on an archery target?

In some areas the "bullseye" is also known as the "center bull" or the "bull"; it is currently unknown exactly where the term originated.

It is also often referred to as the "X" and many scoring systems will keep track of the number of X's shot.

According to some sources, the centre of an archery target is also called the 'Gold'; the term apparently has origins with Henry VIII ("The Field of the Cloth of Gold", 1520 A.D.), although no documentation seems to exist which can be used to verify this claim. A "bullseye" is also used in reference to the game of darts. The"X" is known as the "Inner 10" and, as mentioned above, it is used in the scoring system. In certain forms of indoor archery, "The Inner 10 Ring" is largely used with Compound bows; compound bow users have to hit that to score 10; the outer 10 is for all other types of bow.

How can you become an Olympic archer?

You don't "try out"...

There are 2 (3ish) main ways of getting in.

  1. Place in the top 3 in the World Championships the Year of the Olympics or the year right before.
  2. Compete against thousands of national level archers in the tier like elimination rounds. I want to say that they start about 6 months prior to the games, but you should check that out yourself.
  3. Have a FITA ranking in the top three of your gender. (Look it up if you don't know what that is)

The reason why the 3rd one is ish is because usually if you have a sky high FITA Ranking you will exel in the international championships and the Olympic Trails.

Good luck, but don't think that it's easy...
