How are pests controlled on organic farms?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sometimes they do not need to control them because the number of them stay down lower than farms that use fertilisers (and pesticides, incectisides ect) , this happens because the pests have less chance of surviving in non-organic farms so they breed more, and can become immune to the pesticide so they actually have more bugs. A way of stopping slugs is to put cracked eggshell around the object that you don't want harmed, this is a humane way to stop slugs because it deters them, rather than killing them. I hope this has been of some help to you

Advantages of organic Fertilizer!

  • Organic fertilizers are excellent for the soil. The organic matters in such fertilizers are essential for microorganisms, which build up the soil rich in humus.
  • The organic fertilizers release the nutrients in a slow and consistent rate that the plants can utilize. Since the microbes break down the materials, there is little risk of over concentration of any element.
  • The plants are provided balanced nutrition because of the presence of a broad range of trace elements.
  • Organic fertilizers are safe for all types of plants and there is no danger of burning due to salt concentration.
  • Organic matter binds to the soil where the roots can access it. So, it is long lasting as the organic fertilizers do not leach out.
  • The fertility level of the soil can be maintained with less work once the healthy soil condition is reached.
  • There is also less risk of over stimulation. Organic fertilizers do not lead to exceptional growth, which can lead to a variety of problems. The plants grown on organic fertilizers have a controlled growth.
  • Organic fertilizers also make the plants stronger to resist disease and pest attacks. Plants fed on organic fertilizers are also able to resist the advance of weeds and other parasitic plants.

Disadvantages of organic Fertilizer

  • Organic fertilizers release the nutrients in a slow manner as in some cases the cooler soil temperatures hinder the release of the elements.
  • Organic fertilizers are dependent on microorganisms to break down the organic matter. If the soil is deficient in these beneficial microbes then the plants cannot get the full benefits of the organics.
  • They are very expensive compared to the same amount of chemical fertilizers.
  • Some types of organic fertilizers are difficult to apply in large areas. As a result, they are less convenient.
  • Organic fertilizers are difficult to get in some areas and also they may not be available in large quantities. Depending on the locality, the choice and blends of the organic fertilizers may be offered in limited quantity.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not necessarily. Broccoli can be organic, but just because it is a vegetable doesn't automatically make it organic. When a vegetable is organic, it means they didn't use pesticide (non-organic ones, anyway), and didn't use GMO seeds. There is more to organic than simply fruits and vegetables.

Are there any pesticides on organic foods?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. Organic foods do not contain any pesticides in them. This is what makes organic food different from conventional or natural foods. Although organic food does not use any pesticides, they use natural substances that are approved by USDA and other organic organizations. These help avoid pests while maintaining the soil’s health too. One of the brands that grows its food completely naturally without the use of any pesticide is Organic Tattva. They have over 100 organic products which are certified organic by the USDA.

What is the signifcance of garlic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is some evidence that garlic has a beneficial effect in lowering blood cholesterol. Hippocrates first recommended garlic for the treatment of battle wounds, it has had a reputation for potent medicinal properties. It is highly regarded as a cure for colds, coughs, and other viral infections, including verrucas, but there is little scientific evidence of its efficacy. It may also offer some protection against stomach ulcers (one theory suggests that it eradicates Helicobacter pylori, bacteria that are implicated in the development of some ulcers). Several clinical trials have shown garlic to reduce blood cholesterol levels and the risk of blood clots. Louis Pasteur formally studied and recorded garlic's antibiotic properties. Dr. Albert Schweitzer used the herb to successfully treat cholera, typhus, and dysentery in Africa in the 1950s. Before antibiotics were widely available, garlic was used as a treatment for battle wounds during both World Wars. Garlic can be used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. It has been shown to be effective against staph, strep, E. coli, Salmonella, Vibrio cholera, H. pylori, Candida albicans, and other microorganisms. Garlic also helps prevent against heart disease and strokes. Current studies show that garlic can improve immune function and may even help in the prevention of cancer. To be of benefit in chronic conditions, garlic should be used daily over an extended period of time.

What do factory farming and organic farming have in common?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

[1] In theory and in practice, the two tend to be direct opposites of each other. [2] But the two actually do hold in common an attempt to control the endproduct. [3] But the similarity stops there. For factory farming seeks to make the most profit at the lowest cost, and in the fastest time. And it does so by confining its animals and subjecting them to antibiotics, growth regulators, and hormones. [4] In contrast, organic farming seeks to produce the healthiest product in the healthiest of environments. [5] So factory farming's choke collar is finances, and organic's is health.
