How is jazz and modern dance stylistically different?
"Modern dance" is a form of theatrical dance that began with Isadora Duncan's rebellion against ballet at the beginning of the 20th c. Other pioneers were Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn who were followed by Doris Humphery, Martha Graham and many others. There are different styles of modern dancing, just as there are many styles of jazz dancing, which started during WWI with its roots in Afro-American ethnic dancing that came with them on the slave ships. Jazz dancing as we know it today mainly developed in New Orleans along with jazz music. The dancing began around the 1930's and has become a highly skilled theatrical form. It is mainly associated with syncopated rhythms and popular music. Caribbean and Latin American moves were added to the dancing especially by innovative people like Katherine Dunham. Both modern dance and jazz dance are known internationally as uniquely American forms of dancing.

At the dance studio i go to, they have springs underneath the floors and they help us immensly with our joints.
