The white and red flag bearing the crowned eagle on a red shield in the centre of the upper white band is still indeed the state flag - flown normally by the President and by government buildings. I fly it myself on my consulate.

The crown was maintained on the form of eagle adopted by the Second Republic, with the rebirth of Polish independence, to symbolise that Poland was its own master and subject to no-one else. The Communist decision to dispense with the crown after World War II was universally unpopular in Poland.

With the birth of the Third Republic, after the fall of Communism, the crown was restored again as a symbol of full Polish sovereignty.

During the invasion of Poland (September 1 - October 6, 1939), the Luftwaffe first attacked the city of Wieluń in south central Poland. The city was "carpet bombed", destroying 75% to 90% of the town, and killing more than 1200 of its 15,000 civilian residents.

The Luftwaffe also acted as airborne artillery. Planes such as the Stuka dive bomber went ahead of the Panzers, destroying targets that would impede the tanks' advance, as well as destroying the small Polish air force.

Britain and France both had a defence agreement with Poland. When Germany attacked Poland on 1st September 1939, Britain and France both declared war on Germany two days later but their actions did absolutely nothing to help Poland.

British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain sent a personal letter to Hitler after the German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact was signed. He urged Hitler to avoid a war that would be a catastrophe for Europe. Hitler had already made up his mind to invade Poland, and replied to Chamberlain that Britain's assurances to Poland only caused Polish terrorism against Germans living in Poland. This of course was Nazi propaganda.

They don't, they speak Polish. However there is a number of people who know french as a second language for school, work or just because. For the most part, most Poles speak polish to one another.
