Remove the front of the steering wheel cover, disconnect or clip the horn wires. remove the shaft bolt. use a puller to remove the steering wheel (available at auto parts stores or make one using angle iron drilled and tapped) compress spring loaded plate (tool required Best to make one out of flat iron bent in U shape drilled in the center with threaded stock brazed to a nut that will thread on to the shaft) remove the retaining ring being very careful not to damage it. remove plate and bearing pre-load spring. remove the turn signal switch, if you can pull it over the shaft without disconnecting the wiring harness do so if not, the harness clip is on the side of the column under dash. use a small screwdriver to press in on the detent allowing you to pull the key switch out.

The knock is absolutely not the piston hitting the cylinder head. The knock is because the clearance of the rod bearing to the rod journal on the crank has increased to such a point that there is actually a gap. As the crank turns the rod is "slamming" back and forth causing the sound. In fact, a worn rod bearing actually does not push the piston as high in the cylinder. In other words, it would be further down from the head.
You can run a heavier oil or maybe add some Lucas to quiet it down, but that's just a band aid. Eventually you will have to rebuild the engine or find yourself on the side of the road.
there are going to be timing marks don't quess at this point. Either the new gears will have circles or a line, also look thru the gear is there anything on the head to align with. Also check out the belt tensioner is it in good shape. I had a guy swap new gears but thru the belt shortly after because he never changed the tensioner. Check inside the box of thew new gears they should give you an idea where the marks are

Check your o2 sensor on the exhaust manifold. If that's not it, try the heat control sensor on the intake manifold. You might also want to test out a new ECM and the timing.
Not likely with only 27k. Probably valve cover gaskets leaking if the leak is under the engine. Transmission pan gasket if under the tranny. Could also be the filter or the drain plug leaking. When installing the filter, be sure and oil the gasket, make sure the old gasket came off, and tighten 3/4 turn after the filter contacts the mounting surface. Also check the drain plug gasket. If the leak is there then just replace the gasket and tighten to 20 lb/ft torque. No more, no less, or you may cause a leak. Remember on a car that is driven rarely, it is a good idea to change the oil/filter every 6 months, even if the car is rarely driven and has few miles since the last change.
Pontiacs are also notorious for leaking at the rear main seal, especially after a rebuild. Although I'm assuming this one has not been tore down. With as few miles as this car has, it has probably sat for long periods of time allowing the seal to dry out. The hardest thing in the world on a car is to sit for long periods of time. But I agree that it is probably not a major or serious problem.

AnswerI have found that manuals for this model are as hard to come by as the parts are (Haynes doesn't even have one in print). As such, the thermostat is located behind the rear upper timing belt cover. You will need to remove the front timing belt cover, the cam shaft gear and the rear timing belt cover (in that order) to access the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is held to the block with 2 bolts. Remove the housing and the thermostat is underneath. Remember do not turn the cam/cam shaft gear once the timing belt is off otherwise you will screw up the engine timing!NOTE: Make sure you replace the thermostat gasket when you replace the thermostat. The gasket is usually sold seperately from the thermostat. It is a rubber gasket that fits around the thermostat itself, NOT between the housing and the block. In other words, the housing can not simply be sealed with silicone/form-a-gasket the way most housings can, you MUST use a new gasket.

Search for C6020-175719 and you'll find the aftermarket part for less (usually specified for the Cadillac Catera) than the genuine GM part number 3439088.
