In America it's called a zip code. The numbers refer to a nationwide grid with the northeast part of the country (the oldest part) being lower numbers (ex. 111xx) and the Southwest part of the country being higher numbers (ex. 999xx).

London has thousands of different Post Codes. Each group of around 10 addresses has its own code and some large buildings have their own code. A London post code would look something like this: SE25 2TP or E16 5LS.

There have been many world-wide complaints over the past several years regarding the postal code error message that pops up on Yahoo's "create a new account" registration form. The problem has yet to be resolved, and Yahoo seems indifferent concerning this technical glitch. there isnt just one postal code, there are numerous postal codes. It all depends on the area you live in

There is a different postal code for each town, and in big town like Paris there are several postal codes. One way of finding it is to run a quick search on google.fr, (enter the place name + "code postal"). This should return the postcode (a five-digit number). Another way is to enter the name and town of the person you are looking for in an online phone directory, like the "pages jaunes" (follow link for that one). The person has to be listed in the phone directory. The answer will include the full postal address including the zip code.
