Poverty is among the greatest environmental threats in the world?
At 1972 UN Conference on Human Environment in Stockholm, Indira Gandhi called poverty the "world's greatest environmental threat". He is referring to the lack of access to resources and capital (financial, social, human, physical and natural) that prevents the impoverished from making rational decisions about their use and maintenance of scarce resources, including grazing lands, forests and water. Poverty and the inability to access resources can lead to irrational decisions, such as overgrazing, deforestation, and the pollution of water sources, all in the name of sustainable livelihood.
Consider Garrett Hardin's theory of the "Tragedy of the Commons" (1968). He argues that common pool resources (such as public grazing grounds) will be used advantageously by each herder in order to maximize the benefit of their own herd (he used the example of adding more animals to the herd, until the land reached "maximum carrying capacity" and was destroyed through overgrazing).
His theory has never proven accurate, however. As Elinor Ostrom (Nobel Prize winner) and many others have proven, agriculturalists and those that make a living from the forest, when they have access to resources and capital, also put in place traditional means by which they govern use of the land, in the understanding that they need the land to sustain themselves.
It has only been in cases of poverty, such as the herders in Mongolia following the democratic transition, in which they find the destruction of the environment. For instance, following privatization in Mongolia, livestock distribution was unequal, with only a few receiving enough livestock to sustain their family, migrate to watering holes and proper foliage, and the finances/materials with which to build seasonal shelters for their herds. The poor herders mass migrated to major cities, usually the capital, in order to find second jobs or access markets. Their cattle have overgrazed the lands around and in the city, making the cattle unhealthy. They have also further polluted the river Tuul, which runs through the capital.

Racism is still a sensitive topic in Namibia although people say there is no discrimination or racism. Mostly the older generation is responsible for this. They don't want to accept each other.
The newer generation does not care about race. They make friends with different people and accept each other as they are. They study together and work together to build up the country in unity.

God allowed Jesus to be born into poverty because he didn't want people to think that they needed to be rich in order to do great things and be called to do something that will change the world.
If you stop and think about it--ANY social standing that Jesus came into after leaving the splendor of heaven would be poverty to Him. The greatest palace in the world--then or now--compared to Heaven is just a pitiful shack. There is another reason, too. I believe that God wanted Jesus to be born into poverty because He came for everyone. He didn't just come to save the rich people: He came for the poor and the hurting. In order to live like these people did, He had to come into society as a regular human being and fulfill the prophecies written about His death and His life throughout the Bible. You may think that Jesus just doesn't understand your pain, and that it he doesn't know what if feels like to have your parents divorce, or to have your dad move out, or to have alcoholic parents, or to have an abusive parent, or to be sexually abused, or to have a kid when your 15, or to not have parents at all, or to do drugs, or to be in depression, or to have a mother that brings men home at all hours of the night, or to have nobody like you at school. But Jesus knows the pain because when he died on the cross he felt the pain of your divorce, he felt the pain of your parents abuse, he felt the pain of your mistakes when you though you were in love, or when you killed your best friend driving drunk. It says in the Bible that He was so smothered in sin for just those final hours that His Father in heaven could not look upon Him, and He cried out to Him. Jesus knows your grief because he came for us all into a life of poverty in order to come to the common people. He came to save the sinners, and that's all of us, so He had to come into our world to be crowned King of the Jews.
