Why volcano being compared with pressure cooker?

Volcanoes and pressure cookers both involve the build-up and release of pressure. Just like a pressure cooker traps steam until it's released, a volcano traps magma (molten rock) until it erupts through the Earth's crust. Why does boiling point decrease in pressure cooker by increasing pressure?

It doesn't. When the pressure inside the sealed pot increases, the boiling point of

the fluids inside it also increases. That's exactly what you want, and the reason

you use the pressure vessel.

For example, if you're cooking something in water, and it's open to normal

atmospheric pressure, then it can never get any hotter than 100° C (212° F) ...

at that temperature, the water turns to vapor and wafts away. So the food

you're cooking can't get any hotter than that either.

But if you seal the water and let the pressure increase, then it can get hotter

without vaporizing. Then the slab of meat in the water can also get hotter, and

it can cook sooner.

I have a mirro 4 quart pressure cooker that leaks steam where the vent tube is screwed into the top. Is there a liquid used to seal the vent tube on the top of a pressure canner?

Actually, this is more lilely to be consensate from the regulator weight. Some of the steam condenses on the weight and drips down the tube. The lid is hot enough that it then biols and appears to be a leak. I can with 4 different pressure canners, of 3 different manufactures, and they all do it. Wrap a bit of cleanex or paper towel, and the water will be absorbed until is gets saturated. If the steam continues without wqiting for the towel to get wet, then it may be leaking a bit. You can also remove the vent stem, and reset it with teflon plumber's tape. The pressure and temp are well below the tolerences of the tape. It will seal most minor leaks.

How do you cook artichokes in a pressure cooker?

If you plan to cook the artichokes whole, first remove the other leaves, and open the center delicately to remove the choke. Then, put the steamer basket in your pressure cooker (if you don't have one those metal foldable ones that open like flowers will do) add two cups of water with a squirt of lemon. Place the artichokes on the steamer basket inside the pressure cooker face up. Close and lock the top. Turn the flame to high and when it begins to whistle (actually it's more like a hiss) turn the heat down to low and count 10-12 minutes. At which point turn off the heat, release all of the vapor, open the pan and enjoy your artichokes!
