Protestantism

Generally associated with the protests against the Catholic Church and its methods, Protestants follow Jesus Christ. One of the early scholars to lead the break from the established church was Martin Luther. If you have questions about anything to do with Protestantism, this is place to ask them.

What is origin of Hanging of the Greens Christian worship Service?

This is a very difficult question to answer. As far as the origin of the service, I do not know. However, the different parts that make up the Hanging of the Greens (or the HOG as we call it at our church), come from the traditions of many different countries, mostly from Europe. It would be best to research the individual parts of the service, such as the use of evergreens, the holy and ivy, the wreath, and the Christmons.

Which apostles were gentile?

None of the 12 apostles, as far as we know, were Gentiles. All except Judas Iscariot (who was from the region called Iscaria) were Jews from Galilee.

Paul, sometimes modestly referred to (by himself) as the 'least' of the apostles, who was not one of the 12 was also a Jew but also a Roman citizen.

The only major character in the new testament who was a Gentile was Luke - the writer of the third Gospel and the Book of Acts, and a companion of Paul on his Missionary journeys. He was a Greek born in Antioch, and a physician.

What does the Latin Auxilium de sancto et de Sion translate into English?

It comes from Psalm 19:3 and in full it is written as: Mittat tibi auxilium de sancto et de Sion roboret te Translation: May he send thee help from the sanctuary: and defend thee out of Sion.

Do Lentils have anything to do with Lent?

No. Despite the similarity in spelling, the etymology of the two words is quite different, and lentils do not play any special role in Lent.

Should women become vicars?

God says in the Bible in Genesis 3:16 that men were to 'rule over'/'be subject to'/ and to dominate women. Three different translations bring out three different nuances, but the sense is still the same: men were to have authority over women:-

Gen 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Gen 3:16 (GNB) And he said to the woman, "I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yetyou will be subject to him."

Gen 3:16 (NET) To the woman he said,

"I will greatly increase your labor pains;

with pain you will give birth to children.

You will want to control your husband,

but he will dominate you."

This was reiterated by Paul:-

1Ti 2:11-14 NET A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness. [v. 12] But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet. [v. 13] For Adam was formed first and then Eve. [v. 14] And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression.

Note that God says in Genesis 3:16 that women will want to have authority over men, and God says through Paul that women are more easily deceived than man.

Some will say this was only Paul's opinion, but Peter says that Paul's writings were to be regarded as scripture:-

2 Peter 3:16 speaking of these things in all his [ie Paul's] letters. Some things in these letters are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures.(see Scriptural Note58)

The 'Scriptural Note no 58' by the translators of the 'Net' version of the Bible says

58sn This one incidental line,'the rest of the scriptures', links Paul's writings with scripture. This is thus one of the earliest affirmations of any part of the NT as scripture. Peter's words were prophetic and were intended as a preemptive strike against the heretics to come.

When Peter wrote this Paul was already dead, having been executed by Nero about 68AD, with Peter himself being executed only a little later about 68/69AD. Peter had no reason to lie because he knew he was going to die.

God gives the qualifications for a 'bishop', or 'overseer', and they were the same for a deacon.

1Ti 3:1-8 BBE This is a true saying, A man desiringthe position of a Bishop has a desire for a good work. [v. 2] The Bishop, then, is to be a man of good name, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, serious-minded, having respect for order, opening his house freely to guests, a ready teacher; [v. 3] Not quickly moved to wrath or blows, but gentle; no fighter, no lover of money; [v. 4] Ruling his house well, having his children under control with all serious behaviour; [v. 5] For if a man has not the art of ruling his house, how will he take care of the church of God?[v. 6] Not one newly taken into the church, for fear that, through his high opinion of himself, he may come into the same sin as the Evil One. [v. 7] And he is to have a good name among those outside the church, so that nothing may be said against him and he may not be taken by the designs of the Evil One. [v. 8]Deacons, in the same way, are to be .....

The word 'deacon' comes from the Greek 'diakonos' [Strong's No G1249] and Strong says it means 'specifically a Christian teacher and pastor (technically a deacon or deaconess): - deacon, minister, servant'. As vicars are also a 'diakonos' or 'deacon, minister, servant' and subject to the same restrictions, this means that women should not become vicars at all, just as it means that some men are also unsuitable, no matter how much they may wish otherwise.

I know this may be unpopular, but the important thing is to obey God and not man.

Why does Colin Nevin of Bangor Northern Ireland say Jesus is a Jew and not Christian?

Probably because it was true. Jesus was born Jewish and was raised in the Jewish beliefs. Christians didn't come along until after Jesus had died.

Answer

Jews consider a Jew anyone who was born ofa Jewish mother, so as far as physical descent is considered, Our Blessed Lord was a Jew. Spiritually, anyone who is a "child of Abraham" and worships the one true God could be considered a Jew. All of the first Christians were Jews, and Christianity is nothing other than Judaism fulfilled, we believe the Our Blessed Lord was the promised Messiah that God had promised.

Is Columbia Evangelical Seminary a legitimate school?

The answer to this question is often muddied by former alumni and staff. But the answer at the end of the day is yes, by all all academic standards this school is substandard and lacks any form of legitimate accreditation. They will often use the excuse of the age of the school as why its not accredited but many years have passed and it still has not attended accreditation. Also the leading expert on degree mills in American Dr. Steve Levicoff ( board member of CHEA, Tenured Professor)has this to say about the school.

"For what it's worth, my opinion of CES is unchanged - it's a mill. It may be a sincere mill, but it's still a mill.

CES has quite a list of faculty or mentors (whatever they're called these days), but a key question that is not addressed on their website is how many students they have. When last I heard, they had under 20 students with a similar faculty list - the reverse of most schools in which the students are greatly outnumbered by the faculty.

I note that CES continues to be a personality-driven school, and the one and only key person is Rick Walston. As I've said in the past, I don't question his sincerity (I'm not one to judge that), but I do question his credibility.

Is CES a credible school? IMO, nope. Never was, and still isn't. Anything can look good on paper, or on a web site, but this one doesn't cut it under closer scrutiny."

If this school meets normal educational requirements that one would reasonable expect to find at a accredited school, why then would one put forth all the work needed to earn this degree and simply not attend a proper education?

What interrupted the Irish Protestants and Catholics as they were preparing for war against each other in the early 1900s?

When was the Bowery Mission in New York City established?

I'll give you the year,1879, given by the owner of the Bowery Mission, Christian Herald Association on it's website: www.bowery.org.

If you visit the mission auditorium at 227 Bowery near Prince Street in Manhattan, New York City, you'll find a marble tablet dedicated to the founder of the mission ("this mission") Rev. Albert Ruliffson with only the month and year given: Nov 1879. How this month and year was arrived at is anyone's guess.

According to a pamphlet, "A Plea for the homeless men and boys of the Bowery," under the caption The Gospel Lighthouse on the Bowery: "This Mission was opened on November 7, 1879. the Rev. A.G. Ruliffson, Presbyterian minister, and a few Christian friends, observing the wickedness of the locality, took a small room, furnished it economically, and prayerfully commenced the undertaking." So here we have a specific date.

However, when you consult King's Handbook of New York (page 424, Vol 1, 1893) we read: "The Bowery Mission and Young Men's Home, at 105 Bowery, was founded in 1880, for aggressive Christian work among the young men living in that locality...."

In summary, these are the dates: 1879, Nov 1879, November 7, 1879, and 1880.

Which one is historically (if you prefer, factually) correct?

Christian Herald Association did not take charge of the Bowery Mission until after Rev. Ruliffson retired as its first president in 1895. In Christian Herald And Signs Of Our Times published by Christian Herald, March 27, 1895 (page 193, Vol 18, No. 13) a brief history of the Bowery Mission is outlined before Christian Herald incorporated the mission. Here is an excerpt:

For two generations the Bowery has been a focus of crime and misery in the metropolis. Fifteen years ago, Rev. A. G. Ruliffson and Mrs. Ruliffson, long engaged in missin work in New York, decided to open an eastside mission for men. They had frequent conversations with Jerry McAuley of the Water Street Mission on the subject and ...In a few weeks a preliminary mission was launched by Mr. and Mrs. Ruliffson."

Based on the chronology here in 1895, the Ruliffsons along with McAuley would have opened the Bowery Mission in 1880.

The article continues: "A suitable building was found at No. 36 Bowery and there "The Bowery Mission and Young Men's Home was established. " I have put the address and the verb in bold type. According to Dictionary.com the verb found has the following synonyms: create, establish, institute, organize and these verbs mean "to bring something into existence and set it in operation." So based on these accepted synonyms we can substitute any of the other verbs for the bold type established above. The Bowery Mission wass founded (established) at 36 Bowery, in other words.

Local newspapers at the period give us the following information:

The New York Tribune, March 14, 1898, page 3 under The Bowery Mission: A Sketch Of Its Career-Its Financial Difficulties: "The Bowery Mission was started in 1880 at 36 Bowery by a number of men who were interested in mission work."

The New York Tribune, November 8, 1880, page 8: "The Bowery Evangelical Mission, at No. 36 Bowery, was opened yesterday afternoon with a prayer-meeting, at which some 150 persons were present." Yesterday takes us to November 7, 1880.

The New York Times, November 7, 1880, page 5: "The Bowery Mission, between Canal and Bayard Streets, which has been entired refitted and a new chapel erected, has opened yesterday afternoon for the first Fall service." Yesterday puts the opening on November 6, 1880.

In summary, we now have 1880, November 6, 1880 and November 7, 1880 as founding times for the Bowery Mission instead of 1879, and November 7, 1879.

You decide to find information written by its founder Rev. Albert Ruliffson to further pinpoint a date. For this, we turn to the Annual Reports:

(1881) "The First anniversary of the Bowery Mission and Young Men's Home was held in the Chapel, 36 Bowery, on Sunday afternoon and evening, November 6th."

(1883) "There has been no cessation in the work from the night the doors were first opened to the public (November 6th, 1880) until the present time." The date in parenthesis are in the original.

Here we have a specific date: November 6, 1880. This agrees with the New York Times article above.

Returning now to the Ruliffson tablet in the mission, it was erected November 9, 1898 according to an article published by Christian Herald: "Honoring Its Founder: the Bowery Mission Unveils A Tablet to the memory of A. G. Ruliffson, and also celebrates its 19th anniversary." (page 876, November 9, 1898). Based on this tablet, the article attributes the founding of the mission to 1879.

I am more comfortable relying on sources closest to the founding of the Bowery Mission. Thus I accept the November 6, 1880 date. I decided to look at a scholarly work that deals extensively with Christian Herald Association, Norris Magnuson's Salvation In The Slums, which states: "The Herald entered the rescue mission field a year later, assuming control of New York City's hard-pressed Bowery Mission (in 1895), whose origin in 1880 made it one of the nation's oldest." (page 28). Magnuson's bibliography shows he relied on the mission's early Annual Reports for that particular sentence.

My answer to the question, When was the Bowery Mission in New York City established?" concludes the mission was founded November 6, 1880. It should be noted that this year conflicts with that stated by Christian Herald Association.

I encourage you to seek your own answer based on your research using multiple sources that are credible.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your question.

Protestant churches in the 15-th century?

There were no Protestant churches in the 15th Century, because the Protestant movement did not start until the 16th Century. This movement was led by Martin Luther in 1517 AD, who protested against the excessive power of Rome.

Who were the Protestants?

the protestants were the people who did not believe in the ways of the church. their name comes from the word "protest" as that is what they did. in the 15th century, Europe split into 2 groups, catholics and protestants.

Is Colorado Theological Seminary accredited?

Colorado Theological Seminary is not accredited by one of the forty or so accrediting agencies authorized by the Dept. of Education. They are an Affiliate of the Association of Biblical Higher Education (www.abhe.org) which is such an accreditor. However they are not accredited by them. CTS may apply for Applicant status in the future. However, applying for national or regional accreditation is an expensive proposition. And in many ways would circumvent CTS' mission of offering affordable and accessible Christian degree and certificate programs.

Additionally, Colorado Theological Seminary's niche is being able to offer programs by distance learning without any on campus intensives or other requirements. Degrees can be earned totally from the comfort of the student's home. This cannot be done with nationally or regionally accredited schools.

CTS tuition is within reach of the average person and a degree can be attained without taking out a loan or going into debt. This cannot be said of accredited schools as most anyone knows. Approximately 60% of CTS students are already in the ministry. According to Barna, the average size church is less than 100 members. Graduates of expensive schools would have a hard time paying back those loans considering their income levels would be low in comparsion to salaries of those fortunate enough to become employed by a mega church.

Take a look at the affiliations that CTS has made with other Christian organizations and I believe you will find them very credible. They are enjoying their tenth year in operation.

Take a look at their new Alumni Association and Student Union, The Seminary Club, at www.seminaryalum.com.

Why are protastants called protastants?

The Protestant movement was begun mainly by Martin Luther and John Calvin who were disgusted with some of the practices of the Church centred on Rome. One of the most controvertial was the selling of indulgences (certificates 'guaranteeing' less time in 'purgatory' if a large sum of money was paid. Luther, Calvin and others led a protest against Rome and, although they tried to reform the Church they failed. Therefore they split from Rome and formed their oen church called the Protestant movement because of the way in which they pritested against Rome. Most of the beliefs were the same, but the protestant church refused to accept the Pope as head of the Church. The reforming of the church in this way became known as the Protestand Reformation.

What imagery does Edwards use to explain God's mercy in the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God?

In his sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, John Edwards described humanity as being attracted to Hell much in the same way objects are attracted to the earth, i.e. by gravity. In other words, Edwards said that the natural tendency of any human soul would be to fall straight into Hell. The only reason we don't, Edwards said, is that God is holding us up, and it is only by his incredible mercy that He does this, since we deserve to fall right into Hell. He describes us as needing to cling to God to prevent our fall into Hell.

It should be noted that this response is only a brief look at Edwards' theology, and probably an oversimplication.
