Rabies has been known since the ancient days of 2300 B.C. This lethal virus still exists in almost all parts of the world.

According to the Western Journal of Medicine article below, Rabies was considered an "Old World Disease", i.e. from Europe/Asia/Africa. However, it had arrived in the Americas prior to Columbus, presumably over the northern land bridge where Native Americans are believed to have migrated during the last glacial period.

In Ancient times it had essentially spread globally.

How does the rabies virus attack or invade the human nervous system?

The rabies virus travels to the brain and spinal cord cells, their main hosts, and enters the cell. Then, it 'orders' the host to produce the rabies cell parts. After that, the parts assemble and when the host is overfilled with the virus, it bursts and the new cells go off to attack more cells. How cheerful! (sarcasm here)
