Remote controls use infra-red light to transmit signals to the television. Electronic components in the hand control convert the button pushes into a stream of pulses that are fed to an infra-red LED. The pulses are received by a sensor in the television and decoded into an instruction.

If the television is in standby mode, the control circuit remains powered in order to receive and interpret the command to turn on the television. Although the power used to run the control circuit is very small, it still draws current all the time. If the television won't be used for a long period of time, it is worth turning the television off at the main power switch to save electricity.

A few years ago, this question would have been easy to answer. Remote controls were once fairly simple devices. The circuitry inside a television was generally an "add on" to the television. Often, manufacturers used remote control circuits developed and produced by integrated circuit manufacturers so they used standard protocols.

Modern televisions are very different. The remote control is far more complex with a vast array of buttons. Every button generates a string of pulses that is unique and manufacturers normally use a coding system that is not published. To make it harder, the remote control circuitry inside the television is now part of the control micro-processor that resides in almost all televisions. The information needed to build a new remote control can be very difficult to obtain. Most manufacturers will not release the information so a would be constructor will have no help.

On a more positive note, there are various web resources that offer information on remote control codes. The information is often in the form of a file that specifies the string of pulses used by each of the buttons. Although much of the information is accurate, it is no small task to convert the file into something meaningful. It can be equally hard to construct a remote control that uses the information.

Theoretically it is possible to use the coding information and program a small processor to send out the pulse strings. The PIC by Microchip is one of several components that would be suitable. There is a significant amount of programming to be done as well as some electronic design to turn the PIC output into an infra-red signal. Adding a large number of buttons demands some electronics knowledge and experience too.

For most people, the steps to make a remote control are too numerous and complex to be worthwhile. The end result will be no better than the manufacturer's original part and will probably be far more expensive.

If, despite the warning, you decide to go ahead with it, you will need a certain amount of luck and a great deal of persistence. Don't be afraid to ask for help in a forum or two. There are people who work in the field and they can be very helpful indeed.

I have the same box and tv, if your remote is the same "model AT8560" there is not a code listed for Vizio, but you can do a code scan and it will program. Make sure the tv is turned on, and to enter code scan hold down the 'TV' and 'Select/OK' buttons until all the buttons on top start flashing. Then enter '991' into the keypad. The 'TV' light should flash. Then press the 'play' button and get ready to press 'Select/OK' when the tv shuts off. The 'TV' light should be flashing while it trys each code one at a time. Once the tv shuts off press 'Select/OK' once and test to see if it works by pressing the power/volume buttons. If it works press 'Select/OK' one more time to store the code.

The TV remote works by you pressing the buttons you want the TV to do; When the button is pressed it hits the circuit board, the chip can sense the connection in the circuit board, each button has a different code because of the different connections in the circuit board. It then translates the button into a sequence something like Morse code, with a different sequence for each different button. The chip sends that signal to the transistor to amplify the signal and make it stronger. The amplified signal then travels to the LED. The LED transfers the signal in an infrared light to the TV. The TV then "sees" the signal and does what you originally told it to do.

First turn your TV on, press and hold the TV button on your Dish Network remote until all the buttons at the top light up, then let go of the TV button and enter one of the 3 digit codes below and hit the "#" key. Press power to see if your TV powers off, if not repeat until you get the correct code.

These are the steps for a Dish Network Power scan:

1) Turn on your TV

2) Hold down the TV button at the top of your Dish Network remote until all 4 buttons at the top light up

3) Press the large red power button

4) Press the channel up (above the select button in the center of the remote usually) slowly until the tv shuts off

5) Once the tv shuts off press the pound key '#' (at the bottom of your Dish TV remote)

The codes relate to the tv set and not the remote. Google the set or sanyo and you will get the code.

You then need a universal remote to programme to that code or the instructions for the Philips remote to see if that can be reprogrammed. Again Google Philips and the make.

Not normally. The remote is transmitting an infrared beam to the television, so it needs a direct line of sight in order to work properly. Beaming through a frosted piece of glass is going to diffuse that beam in any number of directions.

Try these TV remote codes: 526, 534, 536, 541, 573, 590, 627, 636, 642, 648, 652, 654, 655, 657, 658, 659, 660, 661, 662, 665, 666, 667, 669, 670, 677, 679, 682, 692, 696, 699, 720.

You can find Philip universal remote codes either on the Philips site or the site for the universal remote. Also some cable/satalite providers carry remote codes for the different devices.

Depending on the remote you have some remotes ask for a three digit codes some four and some a five digit codes is need.

I have found out 02429 works for some remotes that need five digit codes.

2288 will work for some remotes that need four digit codes.

Also, for those of you wanting to use a universal remote, I found after some testing that this uses the same code as one of the RCA codes (the 9th or 10th one) that Verizon Fios list of codes.

RCA model L32HD31 has the same IR codes as this TV for some remotes.

DirecTV remote control code is recognized as RCA TV, It has a sequence of 35 possibilities to try.

I had the same problem with my 37L and 42L Vizio TVs but my 26w vizio TV guide works perfectly. on 12/28/2009 I called vizio about the problem and they said that Vizio lost a law suit with a company (tech didn't tell me the company name) that said that Vizio did not own the "TVGUIDE" technology b/c the other company invented it first. So, Vizio was forced to turn this feature off in their new TV's so that's why my guide button with older Vizio 26" TV (bought in 2007) works and my newer 37" and 42" Vizio TV's (Bought in 2008) do not even though the instructions are still in their user manuals which the tech said will be removed in future user manuals. BTW I got the same result with comcast basic cable service and over the air roof top antenna.
