The nation of China has a very large population, of over a billion people, in a geographical area similar in size to the United States, whose population in comparison is only a third of a billion people, so China is overpopulated, and has huge challenges in meeting the needs of so many people with the resources at its disposal. China also has had a difficult history, going from a period of arrogant and autocratic Emperors, to being taken over and exploited by European colonialists, to a very destructive invasion by Japan during WW II, followed by the very destructive reign of Chairman Mao, and the madness of the Cultural Revolution that he imposed on China; it has taken China a long time even to begin to overcome the legacy of this history.

How do you properly list works cited?
It depends on the style asked for. One is the APA (American Psychological Association) style. The other most used one is MLA. Either of their sites lists specific rules. Each is very different, and very specific about how to do a reference page (which is what you are doing when you are listing works cited).
Every author you cite in your paper must be in the reference list, and vice versa. So check and see what the specific teacher or professor wants, in terms of style. APA and MLA also have very good manuals in hardcopy. There is also a style known as the "Chicago Style", but it is not used as much as the other two. Again, it all depends on your subject and course requirements.
Why it is that research requires courage?
Research requires courage in that sometimes you might discover answers which challenge your beliefs. Imagine, if you were an opponent of gold mining in an area of great natural beauty, and while analyzing a soil sample you found evidence of quantities of the precious metal. Your integrity as a soil-scientist now directly confronts your beliefs as a greenie... Imagine historical research into a great battle won by your people showed systematic ethnic cleansing. Would your integrity as a researcher stand against such a confrontation of accepted historical 'fact'?
Courage!
