How to search on a search engine?

In years past, searchers needed to include Boolean characters (example, + or - ) into a search to get the best results. As well, before the " " quote marks around search terms were needed to find the words "exactly as written" in the search.

However, Google and other search engines have advanced so much that most Boolean characters and " " quote marks around words aren't necessarily needed. Search engines can find an instance of each word, no matter where they appear on the page. And, in fact, quote marks are often discouraged on usual searches.

For example, search for Perdue Owl, then search for "Perdue Owl", then search for Perdue+OWL. Perdue OWL is Perdue University's help area for English grammar. Each search should have yielded the same results. Try "Richard Young", a common name. Google will often ask if you want to remove the quotes.

But, let's say you don't want everyone named Richard; instead, you only want Richard Z. Young. Then, quote marks will help weed out results missing a middle initial.

Quotes always remain the best way to find a quote, say from a book, article, etc. Try searching, "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways" which is the beginning of one of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's famous poems. Try a quote from Shakespear. Using quote marks is useful if you quoted part of a newspaper article from online, but forgot to write down the source info: article title, author, newspaper name, city and state, date, issue number, page number, etc.

What percentage of search users use advanced search?

The only reason someone would use an advanced search is if they didn't find what they were looking for with the first search. First searches usually turn up what a searcher is looking for and rarely is the advanced search option used.

What is the best way to improve your ranking in a search engine?

For an organic or natural search result, a website page ranks highest on a search engine because it has been judged by the search engine to have the content most highly related to the search keyword used.

The factors used in making this judgment depend on measurements which the search engine performs on the billions of web pages which are available on the public internet. These measurements are made in advance of a user's specific search and are stored in a database. The factors may be divided into two groups, "on page" and "off page" factors. "On page" factors are those measurements which are performed by examination of each web page. These factors are under the direct control of the page author. "Off page" factors are those measurements which are performed by examination of all other web pages other than the page being judged.

A webpage owner will typically use a combination of "on page" and "off page" search engine optimization techniques to achieve a high search ranking.

If you compare these 3 - Yahoo Mail and Gmail and Hotmail - which is the best and why?

I suppose it's just a matter of taste... I know that Gmail is certainly the MORE POPULAR of the 2 right now; The one that's more in vogue; The one that's considered "Cooler" (which, the older I get, just seems more & more frivolous a distinction). But for my dollar (and I'm aware there isn't one, as they are both free services), I'll take Yahoo any day. To me, the interface is clearer; more elegant, logical & robust. I like that it behaves like a standalone mail client, with tabs, folders, a preview pane, etc. Contrast this with Gmail, which looks like Design was never much of a consideration at all. It's largely just plain text on a page; kinda like Craigslist (perhaps a SMIDGEN better-looking, but not much). I suppose if that appeals more to your aesthetic sensibility, then so be it, but to me Yahoo just LOOKS better. I consider its interface to be LIGHT YEARS ahead of Gmail. It is a very sophisticated product. Does it have its problems? Yes, of course. But they all do. People frequently complain about spam with Yahoo. This can be a problem, I suppose, but for me, problems with spam have more to do with how long that address has been in use, and HOW it's been used than anything else. If you've signed up for numerous newsletters, and used the address online a lot, then you're going to get more spam. I'll admit, every once in a while, a few spam messages manage to squeak by the Yahoo spam filter, but by marking those messages as spam & not simply deleting them, I'm helping Yahoo's spam filter learn & better distinguish spam from legitimate messages. I had a Gmail account (had it from 2004, when they first came out, and finally killed it in March of this year, when Google changed their privacy policy) that was FILLED TO THE BRIM with spam! I'm talking something like 10,000 or more unread messages (it was a designated "Junk Mail" account - where I got all my purchase receipts & newsletters sent, so that I didn't have to have all that stuff directed to my primary account), and the spam just sort of took over. So spam can become an affliction regardless of which service you use."

Regarding Hotmail, I tend to not think of it as a serious option, despite the fact that I do have an account there as well (I use it as a designated "Junk Mail" account), because its functionality with Mac OS is very intermittent, regardless of which browser you use (and I have tested it with several: Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera). I frequently go into my Inbox there, only to discover that nothing happens when I click on my messages, or I'll click on a message, and it'll bring me to my Windows Live home page, and NEVER take me to the message. Really bizarre behavior, which Microsoft should easily be aware of (they're supposed to be testing such things), and should have fixed by now. Beside that, the interface, as compared to Yahoo, is really not so great (still better than Gmail, but I don't think that's saying much). It's got a very Windows look to it (which is OK if you're a Windows user, I suppose, but if you're not, it just kinda looks bad). From a Design perspective, I'm really not a fan of the floating text labels as opposed to actual buttons. The absence of buttons serves to make the interface unclear. I've found myself having to hunt for the Reply button (or label) because its placement is not intuitive, and because as merely text, it is hard to differentiate it from other data on the page. Basically, if you're a Windows user, then I suppose Hotmail might look attractive. To anyone else (particularly Mac users), it's probably not an option they'd consider seriously.

What are the spider search engines?

A spider is a program that automatically fetches Web pages. Spiders are used to feed pages to search engines. Its also known as a robot or a crawler, is actually just a program that follows, or "crawls", links throughout the Internet, grabbing content from sites and adding it to search engine indexes.

Spiders only can follow links from one page to another and from one site to another. That is the primary reason why links to your site (inbound links) are so important. Links to your website from other websites will give the search engine spiders more "food" to chew on. The more times they find links to your site, the more times they will stop by and visit. Google especially relies on its spiders to create their vast index of listings.

What are 2 disadvantages to using a search engine?

Researchers have to deal with relevancy. That is when 300,000 (example) search for same term and which site has been visited most often. that is why some domains always appear first page in results. Another bugaboo is the idea of related content. Some search algorithm go by synonyms to direct traffic to paid advertisers. that is how a search for a "ford" part will have results that list "chevy."

may come up with something unsuitable and may take to much time looking for your chosen website.
