One of the first Serbian settlements, Raška, was founded in the first half of the 12th century by the House of Vlastimirović which eventually became the Serbian Kingdom and then the Serbian Empire, which was ruled by the House of Nemanjić.

Serbia would have received further harassment from Austria-Hungary, and that could have affected whether or not Frederick Ferdinand (The Archduke of Austria-Hungary) was killed or not, which was more or less the CAUSE of the war. But if he had been killed, Serbia would have been utterly crushed by the much more powerful Austria-Hungarian military. Also, Russia would have not have entered the War to protect it's Slavic bretheren, and the outcome and Victors of WWI could have been the central powers, since Russia (being a VERY powerful military force) would have not been there to help the Allied powers fight the Central Powers. And only God knows what the world would be like today if that happened

Yugoslavia was created by the Kingdom of Serbia and the Kingdom of Montenegro in 1918. The two states formed a union and accepted the former provinces of Austria-Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia as their partners in the new country.

Yugoslavia essentially means "the land of the south Slavs". "Yug" (pronounced "youg") means "South" in Serbian and Croatian.


Macedonia was carved up from the southern part of Serbia. It did not exist prior to 1945 and was thus not in the "original" Yugoslavia.


After WWII, Yugoslavia was made up of 6 republics: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Macedonia.

Had there not been alliances, no one would have stepped in to defend Serbia and negotiations would have continued. But, Russia stepped in and prevented that. It also made the mistake of provoking Germany, who would have stayed out of the conflict, and joining Austria.

Serbia will be defended by Russia. If Russia mobilises, this brings the German warplan into play, and they must mobilise too. Since the German plan assumes beating France before fighting Russia, the assumption of Russian mobilisation brings France into the war; and since France and Great Britain are linked by an Entente this makes the conflict a global World War.
