What were the Americans' views on American imperialism?

Imperialism Viewed From Abroad:

Having begun a pattern of international involvement, the U.S. discovered that these actions frequently took on a life of their own. In the Caribbean and Central America, for example, the U.S. often had to defend governments that were unpopular with local inhabitants. In Latin America, the cry "Yankee, Go Home!" began to be heard. Even before the Panama Canal was completed in 1914, Panamanians began to complain that they suffered from discrimination.

On the other hand, because the United States was quickly becoming so powerful, other countries-even those fearful about maintaining their independence-began to turn to the United States for help. Both welcomed and rejected, the United States would spend the rest of the century trying to decide the best way to reconcile its growing power and national interests with its relationships with other nations.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As a result of the Spanish-American War, the US stripped Spain of its last possessions in Latin America, as well as in the Pacific. This left the US in the unique position of being the only imperial power in the Western Hemisphere, though it had already been claiming dozens of Pacific islands throughout the 19th century, including Hawaii.

Asked by Wiki User

The USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. Newspaper publishers William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer fanned the war fever in their newspapers. By April 25 this paid off as the US Congress declared war on Spain, kicking off a "splendid little war" and inaugurating an age of American Imperialism.

What prevented the United states from taking possession of Cuba after the Spanish-American War?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Theodore Roosevelt advocated intervention in Cuba, to support the Cuban people and their desire for independence and to promote the Monroe Doctrine. The US couldn't really take possession of a country as an imperialist if they just freed them from another imperialist. It was the beginning of the "international police" identity that would unite the nation against the evil imperialists of the world.

Yet, the US wouldn't help other nations without getting something in return. The U.S. imposed various restrictions on the new government, including prohibiting alliances with other countries, and reserved the right to intervene. The U.S. also established a perpetual lease of Guantánamo Bay, which is still infamously used today.

What were some Ramifications of the Spanish American war?

For Spain it had very few ramifications other than confirming that its leadership was ineffective and problematic. This would lead to the eventual abdication of King Alfonso XIII in 1913 (only 15 years later).

As concerns the USA, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines transferred over to US Authority. This made the United States an Imperial Power and (in many American's minds) on par with the European Powers for the first time. This also expanded America's Spheres of Influence and access to the Far East. The heroes of the Spanish-American War became influential political figures (Teddy Roosevelt even becoming President of the United States).

As concerns Cuba and the Philippines, the United States made very strong requirements of these two nations and governed them in a style very similar to the colony-system that Europe had previously pioneered. The assumption always was that Cuba and the Philippines would be eventually let go, but no timeline was ever set. Filipino Revolutionaries like Aguinaldo who had helped the USA against the Spanish, began to attack American interests after the War.

Puerto Rico was more fully integrated into the USA because there was no intention of every releasing it from US Authority. Life improved somewhat during the century of American control.

How was the world different following the Spanish-American War?

The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and theUnited States, effectively the result of American intervention in the ongoingCuban War of Independence. American attacks on Spain's Pacific possessions led to involvement in the Philippine Revolution and ultimately to the Philippine-American War.

Revolts against Spanish rule had been endemic for decades in Cuba and were closely watched by Americans. There had been war scares before, as in the Virginius Affair in 1873. By 1897-98, American public opinion grew angrier at reports of Spanish atrocities in Cuba. After the mysterious sinking of the American battleship Maine in Havana harbor, political pressures from the Democratic Party pushed the administration of Republican PresidentWilliam McKinley into a war he had wished to avoid.Compromise proved impossible, resulting in the United States sending an ultimatum to Spain demanding it immediately surrender control of Cuba, which the Spanish rejected. First Madrid, then Washington, formally declared war.

Although the main issue was Cuban independence, the ten-week war was fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific. American naval power proved decisive, allowing U.S. expeditionary forces to disembark in Cuba against a Spanish garrison already reeling from nationwide insurgent attacks and wasted by yellow fever. Cuban, Philippine, and American forces obtained the surrender of Santiago de Cuba and Manila owing to their numerical superiority in most of the battles and despite the good performance of some Spanish infantry units and spirited defenses in places like San Juan Hill. With two obsolete Spanish squadrons sunk in Santiago de Cuba and Manila Bay and a third, more modern fleet recalled home to protect the Spanish coasts, Madrid sued for peace.

The result was the 1898 Treaty of Paris, negotiated on terms favorable to the U.S., which allowed temporary American control of Cuba, ceded indefinite colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine islands from Spain. The defeat and collapse of the Spanish Empire was a profound shock to Spain's national psyche, and provoked a thoroughgoing philosophical and artistic reevaluation of Spanish society known as theGeneration of '98. The United States gained several island possessions spanning the globe and a rancorous new debate over the wisdom ofexpansionism.
