A common issue with the era of Subies you refer to is bad head gaskets on the 2.5 motor. Its an expensive fix as the engine has to come out and get mostly torn apart to replace them.

I just had to deal with this one... As you look at the grill, the release is on the backside of the latch assembly and moves from left to right. You can't get your hands in there unless you have small hands. You can't see it with out a mirror and light. I fashioned a small hook out of a wire clothes hangar: about 18" long with a small 1/2" sharp bend on the end of it. Access the release from the underside of the car and just feed it in there. I got lucky and snagged it right away, but you may need to use a mirror and light to try and see where you're fishing. You have to remove the lower plastic dash assembly, get that crap out of the way.

Now u need to get a 12mm socket and remove the brain.

U can now see the mounting assembly, there is a Light Brown relay and a Blue one>>>>> THATS the PUMP RELAY..

it is mounted to the support bracket with on screw.

If it's WHITE smoke, it's probably mostly steam, and indicates you are about to blow a head gasket. Get it fixed quick. If it goes completely, you could be looking at a complete engine rebuild.

the indicator fuse is in the fuse box nesxt to drivers left foot. its with the tail lights on the most right lowest fuse.

This thermostat is located on top where upper radiator hose meets engine for the 1.8 litre engine.Be sure you purchase a quality thermostat with the checkball.This engine is not as picky as later subaru engines regarding the thermostat but it is still advised to use a subaru thermostat if possible.Remove all air by bleeding, filling very slowly is best way to avoid the trapped air pocket

Buy the new sensor and it comes with instructions. The tricky part is finding it. On a forester its located on the up pipe manifold. Since that's a boxer engine, the mainfold is low, you have to get under the car. A bosch O2 sensor has a nice detail set of instructions for replacement.

Location varies with model of Subaru, but most are installed just upstream (towards the engine) from the catalytic converter located under the right hand drive shaft. Mike is correct-- you must get under the car to replace. Make sure you follow safety and use a good set of car ramps on level solid ground to raise the car, or use jack stands. Best to work on a cool engine/car. Unplug the wire leading from the O2 sensor, then unscrew the sensor to remove. The old one may be stuck quite well, but it unscrews like a spark plug. When installing the new one, avoid getting dirt, grease (or anti-sieze) on the sensing tip of the new unit, and just screw back in. It will turn easily for a few turns, then turn harder for about 1/2 turn, then it just stops turning. You have compressed the sealing washer correctly. Remove your wrench, plug the new sensor back in, and lower the car. Do not be surprised if the computer is a bit confused for the first 20 minutes of driving-- it will be re-learning the correct new oxygen sensor.

depends on the previous 5- 10 mins of driving . if you drove it hard all the way to the destination then 2 - 3 minutes is ok if you drove hard and then drive off " boost " for the last 4-5 mins then 30 sec - 1 min should be sufficent.
