How will South Africa be affected if the Suez Canal closes?
If the Suez Canal closes, all shipping traffic going to Europe from the East will have to go around the Southern tip of the African continent. This means all ships will have to pass South Africa on route to Europe or back. South Africa being the most modern country in the Southern part of Africa, all the shipping traffic would mean increased fuel stops, tourism, port expansion, etc. In short, this would spell an economic boom for South Africa.

Why did Hitler want to control northen Africa and the Suez canal?
Hitler was not that interested in controlling North Africa or seizing the Suez Canal from the British. That is a great myth that was not uncovered until after the war. The reason for sending Erwin Rommel & German troops to Libya was to assist Italy. It was actually Mussolini's desire to recreate a new Roman (Italian) Emprire in the Medierranean. The Italians, after pushing 70 miles into Egypt, were defeated between 9 December 1940 and 7 February 1941 by British Commonwealth troops under the command of General Wavell. General Wavell's forces pushed the Italians back about 300 miles west into Libya (an Italian colony). German General Rommel was sent with his forces to prevent the Italian collapse. Hitler needed Mussolini in the war protecting Germany's southern flank. Although the German Africa Corps (Deutsches Afrikakorps)was very successful against the British and threatened the Suez Canal, it was never Hitler's intention to create a major offensive diversion of German resources in an area that was assigned to Italy's 'sphere of conquest'. Rommel was only given enough resources to keep Italy viable & in the war.

Kiel is my hometown so I know a thing or two about it. It's a town in central Wisconsin, between Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebego. It's about 19 miles west of Sheboygan and 15 miles east of Fon Du Lac. It's 65 miles north of Milwaukee and 55 miles south of Green Bay. Kiel, WI is in the United States, but there is no "Kiel Kanal," since it's such a small town. You are thinking about Kiel, Germany, which is in Schleswig province in the north near Denmark and between the North Sea and Baltic Sea. They're two different cities, although Kiel, WI was founded by Germans from Schleswig.
