How did shakespeares plays get handed down to our generation?
A few years after Shakespeare's death, in 1623, two of Shakespeare's actor friends, John Hemmings and Henry Condell, who had been friends and colleagues of his, honored his memory by collecting most of his plays (some 36 of them) into a published book. Some editions of about half of these plays had been published during his lifetime, but that book, now known as the First Folio, is primarily responsible for making his plays available to subsequent generations. This Folio was added to and re-printed several times over the centuries, until the present day, so that we now have a canon of something like 38 plays.

Who acted in Shakespeare's plays?
Shakespeare's plays have continuously on the stage (with a twenty year hiatus) since they were written, and have been continuously filmed since 1899. That is a lot of productions and a lot of actors over the centuries. Before 1660 the actors were all male, but since that time actresses have played the women's parts and sometimes the men's parts as well. And many actors and actresses eagerly embrace any opportunity to perform what are universally regarded as the best plays ever written, sometimes people you might not suspect of wanting to perform Shakespeare. As far as we can tell, they were reasonably well-behaved because they liked the plays. However, Elizabethan and Jacobean audiences could get very rowdy. There are a number of recorded incidents of fistfights and riots taking place among patrons of the Fortune Theatre, home of the Admiral's Men. There are also records of audiences throwing food at the actors if they didn't like the play; this is not known to have happened at the performance of a Shakespeare play, all of which were extremely popular.

It cost one to three pence to see a performance at the Globe Theatre in London, and the same applied to most performances in the large public theatres. But occasionally they charged more--the tickets for the fraud production "England's Joy" at the Swan were much higher than usual. Also the tickets for the indoor theatres were much more expensive, as the capacity was smaller.
