How do I replace the spring mechanism on the fuel door of my 1998 Toyota Avalon?
You first need to find the part. You want Toyota part #7736033020 (fuel door spring.) Most places will probably have to order it so you can save yourself some footsteps by calling ahead to your local Napa or other parts store. It should cost $5-$10. Once you have the part it basically just snaps on to the hinge inside of the fuel door. It fits about half way up the door with the small part of the "V" spring placed closest to the hinge. There are three points that need to be positioned. The outer end of the part (the large "V" end) curls under and clips on to the bracing on the lid, the other end has a small protrusion that slides under the flange portion that is attached to the car body. The third spot is a small notch that fits over, and clamps down onto, the hinge axis. If you only open the door about 1/4 of the way when installing the spring, everything will line up/clip on easier. Once the two ends are where they need to be, snap the spring into place by pressing the notched section down onto the hinge while holding the lid steady.

- When system stops drawing refrigerant in, start engine and set control lever to A/C position and blower switch to HI position to draw remaining refrigerant into system.
- When specified weight of refrigerant is in system, close gauge set low pressure valve and refrigerant supply valve.
- Remove jumper wire from clutch cycling pressure switch connector and connect connector to pressure switch.
- Operate system until pressures stabilize to check operation and system pressures. During high ambient temperatures, a high volume fan may be necessary to blow air through radiator and condenser to cool engine and prevent excessive refrigerant system pressures.
- When charging is complete and system operating pressures are normal, disconnect manifold gauge set from vehicle and install protective caps on service gauge port valves.

Job is not too difficult if you have some heavy duty hand tools and a little time. I bought a spring compressor but could not make it work so I finally took the units to my local independent Toyota garage where they had the proper equipment to remove the shocks from the strut assembly and replace the new ones. They charged me $120 for all 4 and it was well worth the money! I also replaced the original brake disc and pads while I had everything disassembled.
