The previous answer does not, unfortunately, cover the qustion of access to the back three plugs which are located in a confined space below the intake manifold in front of the firewall. If there are two metal brackets located either side of the back of the intake manifold, these need to be loosened or removed so that you can get your hand around the back. Also, the grounding wire needs to be removed from the manifold on the right side. Apparently, the plug wires pull straight out on the back three and you can use an extension socket for the plug itself. You don't need to remove the intake manifold on some models, but you will be operating partially blind. Youtube has a video on this for a similar model

There are two screws in the arm rest and I believe two at the bottom of the door panel. Then you need to pry off the door panel or if you have the tool to pull out the mounting clips from there you remove the speaker and replace. My problem is I can't find the right size speakers.
On other places on the web, I have seen the following additional (please note that this is all unverified): 1. take care in removing the clips by using a shielded tool (tape over a scredriver, etc.) 2. one of the "clips" may in fact require pressing the middle of the clip while removing it. 3. the Ohm rating of the speaker is probably on the speaker. Any wattage is OK, but the proper Ohm rating must be used.

Here is a way for programming a remote for a 2000 Avalon. This method should work for 2001 Avalon also.
Key out Driver door open and unlocked Insert key into ignition and pull out Lock then unlock the power locks from the master switch 5 times Close and then open the driver's door Lock then unlock the power locks from the master switch 5 times Insert the key into the ignition and turn to ON then OFF, then remove key Locks should cycle - If they don't repeat Press both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second Immediately after letting go of the two buttons, press the LOCK button for 2 seconds The locks should then cycle once. If they cycle twice, try again. Close the driver door
This procedure will unfortunately not work for vehicles in Australia because the key fob has only 1 button which performs both the lock and unlock functions
This procedure does work for Australian cars. I just set up a new remote and it worked fine.
FOR AUSTRALIAN AVALONS.
Start with the ignition in the "Lock" position.
CYCLE IGNITION ON-LOCK 3 TIMES THEN ON.
SECURITY LED NEXT TO THE CLOCK SHOULD LIGHT, INDICATING READY TO PROGRAM.
PRESS THE KEY FOB "DOORS" BUTTON FOR A SECOND.
BOTH TURN INDICATORS SHOULD BLINK TO INDICATE ACCEPTANCE.
(IF REQUIRED FOR 2ND/3RD KEY FOB) PRESS THE KEY FOB "DOORS" BUTTON FOR A SECOND.
BOTH TURN INDICATORS SHOULD BLINK TO INDICATE ACCEPTANCE.
SWITCH TEH IGNITION TO "LOCK".
REMOVE KEY, WAIT A SEC AND TEST.
I was frustrated by instructions like the one above. They will not work with the Aussie built Avalons. This will. Outrageous that dealers want A$50 for this 5 second job. Specially after charging 50 for the fob. Let your Aussie Avalon drivers note this simple process in their owners manual.
