Is it easy to replace an alternator in a Toyota MR2?

It is one of the more difficult jobs due to the fact that is is located on the passenger side by the rear wheel. I tried to take it out and realized that it was too cramped and tight to do it myself. I took it to my mechanic, Nguyen's in Santa Clara, CA, and it took his shop two hours to do it. My advice, take it to a shop unless you want to completely frustrate yourself doing it. bo

The Mk1 NA alternator is easy, two bolts and an electrical connection. Alternator is mounted like earlier automobiles, with a long bolt on bottom and an adjusting bolt on top. The Mk1 SC is much more difficult, as it was moved to the front of the engine to make room for the supercharger, and is above the AC compressor. To change the SC alternator requires either removal of the AC compressor, or (and not easy) it can be removed and reinstalled through the engine's air vent. Either way is difficult. As far as the sc model I found it far easier to remove the 3 bolts and unplug the side fan. Lay the fan all the way to the bottom of the engine compartment below and out of the way of the alternator. (You do not need to pull it completely out of the car.) Remove the outside passenger side cowl with 2 screws. Loosen the tensioner on the alternator belt then remove the belt from the alternator pulley. (First loosen the pulley nut and then back off the long tensioning bolt from the bottom.) Unplug the green plug from the alternator. Unbolt the bolt from the top and the long bolt from the bottom of the alternator. A short pry bar helps lifting the bottom of the alternator from its bracket. Then undo the 10mm nut on the charge wire. Now reach through the quarter panel and ease the alternator back and out through the vent hole in the quarter panel. It took me 30 minutes. I promise you there is no need to remove exhaust, compressor, distrubutor, or engine/trans. Hope this helps.

What Engines are compatible with a 1988 Toyota MR2?

Two engines came from the factory for an 88 MR2. The 4AGE is the normally aspirated version of the engine. The 4AGZE is the supercharged version. Some people have installed the 4AGTE - a turbocharged version of the 4AG see www.4AGTE.com. A good reference on the 4AG series engines is available at www.club4ag.com. Others have gone as far as to modify the engine mounts and remove a piece of the firewall between the engine compartment and rear trunk to install the 3SGTE from the second generation MR2. There are companies that offer kits and specialize in this conversion. V6's have been fitted into MR2's using Toyota's 1MZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines. A good writeup can be found at www.mr2mk1club.com/V6MR2.html And not for the faint of heart, a few have taken on the extreme challenge of shoe-horning a V8 into their MR2's. Bill Strong is on his second build of his "Toystar" an 1986 MR2 with a V8 Northstar engine from a Cadillac, see www.v8mr2.com

Why was the Toyota Celica discontinued?

Look at what is being pushed out of dealers today...Celica could not keep up. People were just no longer interested. Toyota moved on.

Answer

Read somewhere that stringent emission norms was a reason.

Don Esmond, senior vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division - Addition of more exciting and youthful products to the lineup, such as the Matrix and Corolla XRS, Solara sports coupe and the Scion xA, xB and tC was a reason as sales for the Celica reflected its declining fortunes, slumping almost 50 percent compared to last year. Year to date, the Celica had dropped more than 33 percent off its 2003 pace.

ANSWER:

Because they are fools.. at least that's my opinion since the Celica has always been an awesome car! Honetsly, though, it's because their other models closed in on the Celica from both sides and outsold it. I guess you can't blame them from a profit standpoint, but from a dedicated Celica driver.. I still do :-)

Where is the oil filter on a 2003 mr2 spyder?

Hi. To get to the oil filter, you need to jack up the car and unscrew the plastic cover underneath the rear engine of the MR2. The oil filter is located in the middle-rear section under the vehicle. Usually black cylinder shaped. You will need an oil filter wrench. Also, have a pan ready cause when you get it out of there, it will spray oil out. Peace, Mike

Why does the tail light fuse keep blowing out on your Toyota 1987 MR2?

"Blowing" FusesFuses and Circuit Breakers are safety devices designed and installed in electrical circuits TO PROTECT the conductors [wires] from short circuits and overload conditions which can cause extreme overheating which can result in damage to the conductors, and worse, the possibility of a FIRE which could destroy the vehicle. When a fuse, and replacement fuses blow, especially if it happens repeatedly, is an indicator of an UNSAFE CONDITION in that circuit, usually a short. Do not install a larger fuse in a misguided attempt to correct the problem. To install a larger fuse would invite damage to the wiring and an electrical system fire. The proper "fix" is for a qualified technician, who knows what he/she's doing, to troubleshoot the circuit, find and identify the defect, and make proper repair [s], BEFORE replacing the fuse again [with the properly sized fuse].

How can you change the speedometer spindle in a 95 Lexus ES 300?

There are two screws in the black part of the inner space of the dash. Unscrew them, then remove the black part. Then you will see the dash assembly held on by a couple of screws, I think about 4 screws. Then the dash assembly will slide out from the dash, there are three harnesses attached to the dash assembly. Be careful when pulling them out so you don't rip out a wire or two. But unplug the harnesses and the assembly will be out and then you just reinstall it the same way you to it out

What type of engine oil for mr2 Toyota 1992?

I have just recently had some engine work done on my MR2 MK2. A specialist told me that normal 10w/40 oil will do just fine. Even "Castrol GTX High Mileage" - comes in a white container. The modern oils that are available today are all thin and synthetic and has been desinged for modern engines. MR2's still prever the plain normal oil as this is what it has been desinged to use. Putting in the latest most expensive oils can do more harm than good.

Coolant change on an mr2 roadster?

Parked the car so that the radiator drain plug could drain most of the system. I also managed to find the rear engine drain plug (right above the braided part of the lower exhaust pipe) and open it too, though I actually don't recommend doing so, since it's painful to close with a hot exhaust. If you could find a steeper slope, the results should be better, since the biggest problem is that the coolant pipes go over, rather than under, the fuel tank, isolating the low points in the engine and radiator from each other.

Tools required are a 12mm box wrench for the bleeders, pliers for the bleeder cap, and a funnel. On my car, the thermostat bleeder required a socket with u-joint and extension and almost 50 foot-pounds of torque to loosen. The others were no problem.

I set the heater to 90 degrees (as specified in the manual), drained the system, filled with water, ran the engine, and drained again. Then I loosened/removed the 4 bleeders and filled with 1/2 gallon of antifreeze plus one bottle of Redline Water Wetter (which does everything EXCEPT lower the freezing point). Another 2 or 3 gallons of water (from my home reverse osmosis unit) filled it up.

As described in the manual, you need to close each bleeder (10 foot-pounds only!) as soon as the fluid is coming out without air. The order in which this happened on my car was: heater cap, radiator, firewall bleeder, and thermostat bleeder. Next time, I'll wait a half minute or so after the air bubbles stop, because I left lots of air in the system this time. I know this because I needed to add another gallon of water over the next two days to top off the system as the air worked its way out. So don't drive too enthusiastically right after you change the coolant! (On the third day, the fluid level stayed at the Max line.)

I really disliked having coolant spill in the front compartment; on the MR2 they give you clear hoses on each bleeder to avoid this. You just hang the hoses from the hood with masking tape, and the coolant travels up each hose seeking its level. Then you close the valve and you have only a tube full of coolant to get rid of. Much neater, but then the MR2's front compartment is not open at the bottom.

Anyway, the whole job can be done as described in well under an hour, and the results seem to be fine. You WILL spill some coolant on the engine, and so you get a noticeable coolant smell for the first drive. Just be sure to check the fluid for a few days until the level maintains itself, and expect to add some water to top it off for a day or two.
