What famous writer helped US Grant write his memoirs?

There has been ongoing debate about this for many years. What we do know is that the famous author Mark Twain approached President Grant about writing his memoirs. We also know that Twain did some (what he claimed to be minor) editing of the manuscript before the final version was published. However, Twain always denied that he wrote the memoirs, and even denied that he helped with anything other than light editing. And Grant's supporters always insisted that it was he alone who did all the writing. This may be one of these stories where we will never fully know the truth, but the memoir was released in 1885 and it sold well. To this day, Grant's Memoirs are still appreciated by historians and students.

What were Ulysses S. Grants mannerisms?

William T Sherman, Grant's closest friend, described him as one of the hardest people to understand he ever met. There is a distinct possibility that Grant suffered from high level autism, not unlike Asperger's syndrome. He had few friends as a child and few as an adult. He did not revel with fellow officers nor seek their society. He was quiet and said little, but when he did speak he could heard across a battlefield. He could order thousands to their death but could not stand the sight of blood, especially animal blood. His empathy with animals was legendary, and he was most likely the best horseman in America. The few friends he had he was devoted to, including Sherman and the Confederate General Longstreet. His command of the English language, as evidenced by his memoirs, shows a literary talent that is clearly genius. He rarely made eye contact, did not indulge in gossip nor politicked, which made his career in the peacetime army difficult. He was, in the opinion of his biographers, one of the most misunderstood men in American history. The stress caused by these awkward mental ticks drove him occasionally to drink and contributed to the constant smoking of cigars which eventually proved fatal.

Who did Ulysses S Grant run against?

His opponent in 1868 was Horatio Seymour from New York. In 1872 Horace Greeley, also from New York, ran against him. (Greeley died after the popular election but before the electoral college voted, so it might have been legally interesting if Greeley had won. )

Victoria Woodhull also ran in 1872, but she was too young to be president, did not appear on any ballots and did not get any votes, so some doubt that she was a serious candidate.

In the south most of the new black voters were Republicans and the many of the whites were not yet allowed to vote. In the North, the Democratic party which had split when the Civil War broke, was still not fully organized, so the Republicans had a great advantage. U.S. Grant was a national hero and tremendously popular for winning the long costly war.

Pros:

It could make the war cease sooner because they're all starving and miserable.
